That sucks. I try to keep my politics out of my music, or else I probably couldn't even find people to play with. I hope there are more people around where you live who are open minded about this (agree to disagree) and get on to the important part, the music. Get online and work with people from all over the world. That's what I do and it's a blast. Good luck!

You can:
1) Ignore the political stuff, just nod your head
2) Take a stand yourself. It's easy to say you're not 'political' - but think of this:
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

3) Move

From what I googled, SLC areas is fairly progressive, so you may see either A) people who are fighting for what's "right" or B) people fighting for the opposite, (the homophobes, etc). So if the people you are playing with are adamant about their stance, you can either just nod your head and go along, or tell them 'whatever' and walk away.

I regard people that disagree with me politically/socially but still make music with me as professional. (in the doing business sort of way) I don't hide what I am from fellow musicians and I don't unnecessarily soapbox where fans can hear me. Somehow, even in intolerant California, I manage to find people to work with. Those that want to be angry that I am not up with the latest PC du jour, can go work with other angry people that are way too concerned about stuff other than music. I'm pretty sure they aren't about to put me in an internment camp, GMike, but I guess it is like they said about the Jews, if they'd all had guns, perhaps the cost could have been made too high for the enforcers when there was no one left to speak for them.

It is concerning that people are defining speech as violence and using that to justify actual violence in the name of tolerance.
“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”

I think if the content is political or religious driven... you/they most likely need like minded individuals or there will be conflicts. So why bother if that's the motivation? Not worth the inevitable strife... imo.

Now if you're just a hired hand... you may see it different. To each his own.

^ that ^

In my bluegrass band MERE MORTALS ...we're all a bunch of card carrying, hard core lefties, so besides music, movies, books, sports, food, beer.......politics is something we often discuss as well. But we're all on the same page so it's never a problem.

Now, in two of my other bands....politics never comes up because we understand we are NOT all on the same page. And w no pressing need TO bring it up, if no one brings it up...there are no hard feelings or bad blood.

As i see it, that's keeping the peace for the greater good (the Music), but it's also just plain old respect and courtesy. Besides, it's not like we don't have other $hit to talk about.

But what would you do if they all came to a gig wearing MAGA hats - and wanted you to wear one too?

well, first, second, and third off....no one i work with WOULD do that.

Even if I can't agree w a cpl of guy's politics and they w mine......we're all of the same mind that none of us thinks it right to force our views on the other. No one wears MAGA caps or Democratic propaganda because no one of us speaks for the entire group.....MERE MORTALS, now that's different.

What would I do if I was in a band that insisted I wear a MAGA hat? Well, i never would have involved myself in such a situation to begin with.

pickup gigs were brought up in an earlier post....now, if i was in dire circumstance and needed to feed my family, that's another story. thankfully that's not my situation so, really...no matter how much money was waved in front of me for a one off pickup gig at a Trump rally, or some gig where I was expected to wear a MAGA hat.....i can pretty safely say i'd pass on any gig like that.

full disclosure....a little while back when people were losing their $hit and going batshit crazy over the Kapernick and kneel down hysteria, I did put a bigass, and easily seen number 7 in 49'ers colors on the front of my JBass which was the one i mostly used at the truckstop back then.

I played at a Halloween party once dressed as a woman and tripping, I don't
think I had any political messages showing.
The rest of the band was on the same page, they were all dressed as woman and
tripping also.

I just got in touch with my feminine side, and now I can't quit touching it.
