Music Industry Discussion

I feel that it is grand that you are willing to accept that what you do may influence the weak minded you jedi you. I also hope to influence those who hear my work. Censorship is a very slippery slope though. I mean you have heard our tune Life. I wrote that piece as an expression of my own experience. And the lyrics are directed at me and me alone. The general public not knowing that would no doubt say I was trying to force my will if they did not identify with the lyrics themselves.
I would no doubt be stoned to death by radical Islam for my in yo face attitude even though the true intent is in my face. Tellin me to stand up for what I believe. I bet your son has a hair of the dog in him and can take care of himself just like I know you can. We dont want to be a negative influence yes, Even if we were by chance, in my sense that would not make us responsable for the acts of fools. Only responsable for our own poor judgement.

Hell, if the Beatles' Helter Skelter can be twisted around to glorify someone like Charlie Manson's vision of Utopia through killing actresses, perhaps we shouldn't do anything but religious music, eh?

Nah...there's always gonna be some twit out there taking things too seriously, & I am not responsible for thier actions, no matter what I write or sing or speak out about or paint on a frikken canvas.

Yeah, the sheep are there, waiting to absorb all of our negativity. Let 'em.

Maybe they'll be swayed by a Disney movie to hunt singing crows or flying elephants, too.

Music is an art, but also an energy. You can use it for good or ill, and that's all in the intent of the musician. For instance, I could certainly write and perform a song excoriating all Muslims with all sorts of derogatory comments and so forth, but in today's world I can't see the point because it would do more harm than good. So as a moral choice, I don't.

I always liked the Buddhist take on when and when not to speak. There are three criteria:

1. Is it the truth?

2. Do you seek to help, or create rancor?

3. Is it the right time?

I think that can be applied to musicians too.

Charley Manson and me were both influenced by The Beatles back in the 60's.

But thank the Gods you didn't feel compelled to stick a butcher knife in a pregnant actress because of it!

Cracks me up when ppl start talking about the "magical" qualities of music, or color, or feng shui, for that matter.

I don't think that music can truly affect me any more than having my couch over here or over there. (Although I get PO'd when I trip over stuff cuzza bad traffic patterns in a house.)

That being said, I must admit that when I hear LL Cool J or Coolio I find myself inexplicably drawn to violent behavior.

I agree with Irminsul , and i dont think its a magical thing but more cause and effect. I read a study on the tempo of mass selling songs a few years ago. it states that the tempo ranges between 60 and 80 bpm. the reason stated was this: in the womb we are isolated to one rythem.......the heartbeat. the average pulse is between 60 and 80 bpm. this in turn is imprinted in our developing minds. creating the question , after a period of time in hearing the same thing over and over( timing and sequence) do we naturally merge toward that in which we were exposed to? a possible habitual state ? take a lyric riding on this idea. does it not seem possible? throw some drugs in the mix with a unstable mind from poor parenting, and you got Jeremy.(Pearl Jam) I dont think that music alone can MAKE anyone do ANYTHING, but i do believe it can be a catalyst.

JON, I can see what you mean...I have read that the "happiest" key for the average person is D major, for some reason...& some guy did a study that in 4/4 time, if you consistantly put the emphasis only on the 3rd beat, it's most irritating to the nervous system...dunno about any of that, myself.

Still, we can only hope to be smarter than a buncha twisted nerves. Give me a buncha drugs & I can guarantee I won't become Jeremy...just cuz you HAVE 'em don't mean you hafta take 'em all, & if you do, I don't think you can blame the music for setting you off.

I'm not so sure... it's vibrational energy. And at the most basic level, people are just energy.
The right sounds/tones and frequency can cause things to shatter. Or make a person throw up.

So there is probably 'something' to it. I would think the influenced would have to have a flawed mind to begin with though.
...But at the end of the day, I don't care. I'll write whatever.
