I've never been a fan of bone-crushing guitars--not even when I was much younger and still had plenty of anger to dissipate. At the same time, I listened to these, and as far as I can tell...everything is in tune. But maybe I'm suffering from 'tin-ear syndrome.' (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Hey, how's your new piano guy working out? Been recording anything new w/ him?

I saw Deep Purple on Boston Common, summer of 72. My and my best friend took the bus up from Cape Cod for the show.

He's excited to learn the piano riffing in "My Woman From Tokyo", we jammed on it a little that night. He's also listening to the original stuff, which will take a little time to work into. But the sound is huge now!

That's cool. It'll be good to hear how it sounds on Tokyo and Out of the Blue, for example. If I were up there, I'd be ready to jump in on it. You have no idea how awful it is down here, musically. Have I mentioned how much I miss the Midwest? So much that I dragged out my old MSB Live and played Midwest Midnight a few times?

I remember it well! It was part of the Boston Sunset Series of concerts, so we figured that music would start around 6, so we grabbed the 4pm bus out of Bourne.
Curved Air and John Kaye (Steppenwolf) and one other band were supposed to play. We got off the bus on Boylston Street (where the Greyhound terminal used to be) about 4 blocks from the Common and could hear the opening chords of Smoke On The Water echoing through the streets. We ran as fast as we could, paid our $4, got in and the place was mobbed. Managed to push our way within about 40 feet of the stage. When DP finished, it was about 6:30. We thought it strange that they would have opened. And even stranger that everyone started leaving! Turned out that the show that day started at 2pm!
