Sheeeet, Mike...I ain't no one trick pony!

Ok, I'll cut you slack on this one  , as your chord progression from the previous project came out so well on my song 'Miss Mexico' (which will be on the new album).

Tried it yesterday at our weekly jam. It sounds pretty dirty. Might have some usable stuff.

interesting and TOTALLY jook like. i would never mistake that take on it for anyone but you, mr. jook!

i liked the pauses. but i to admit that i was hoping after the first one, that you'd move things to more of an "inside vibe".

6/8 time is one of the many feels i've been exploring w this progression.

at Mere Mortals (bluegrass) prct last night i busted out that chord progression and handed out chord charts to everyone. the fiddle gal was bitching that i didn't have a melody line and "what do i play???!!??!" (she's a great player but really not big on winging things or coming up w parts on the fly).

after we got the chords lined out and came up w a feel that worked for everyone, i suggested she and i play a descending scalar line in harmony. she made a good suggestion about how to phrase it....and it really did come off pretty cool.

regrettably i didn't get it recorded. we've got a gig coming up in a few days and hopefully i can talk everyone into trying this on the bandstand.

thanks for weighing in jook. so, who's next? i'll try to get a version (or three) recorded asap to share.

I wanted to move seamlessly from the D > E and take it away from the Ionian atmosphere. So you get an Asian pentatonic in E to wrap things up. Yeah, it's a wacky idea, but I'm kind of a wacky guy (I thought you knew this??) That pentatonic line really shines when you hear it in reverse.

of course i know you're a wacky guy and usually take that approach....which IS cool. i guess i was just hoping to be surprised by you "playing it straight" and thought THAT would be an interesting and unexpected surprise after the more "outside" opening of the tune.

and the backwards stuff at the end....POINTS!!!! that was a VERY nice surprise! 8)

one of the reasons i've put these "projects" out there is for precisely that reason....yes, to hear everyone's different recording, but also i'd hoped it might be a stepping stone to DISCUSSING our different approaches.

(say WHAT???... a MUSIC discussion? around here? on a "music forum"???)

...the nuts and bolts stuff, exactly like what you shared above. thanks for being an active and regular participant in those all too rare kinds of discussions around here! 8)

Other than some small practice amps, my only amp right now is a Line 6 Spider IV 75. YIKES a solid state? Yup. It gets me all the tones I need for recording. And some of my recordings have fooled some good ears, thinking I was using a valve Vox. Settings - what sounds right to me, for the song. The amp's got a zillion presets, including some I've created myself, but most often I'll just play with the amp model, drive and tone and find what I like at the time, then I can save it to recall it if I need it again. Line 6 has just released the Spider 5 line, which includes amp and cabinet sims.

Recording techniques - get the sound you want when recording, and you don't have to do much processing during mixing. Acoustic - LDC (AKG Perception 220) about 12" out from the 12th fret. Electric - Shure SM57 pointing towards the outside edge of the speaker cone of above amp, a few inches out. Occasionally I will DI the guitar, and sometimes, even DI + miking the amp. Bass - DI, then PodFarm sim on it.

Picks - Fender Heavy, my only choice for 40+ years.

recording at home.....direct, amps, and Johnson J-Station (amp modeler/spkr cab simulator).

amps on the gig.... for gtr: FENDER Reissue Blackface '65 Deluxe Reverb, FENDER Blues Deville 2x12, ROLAND Cube 60

bass: Ashdown Blue 180 combo, Ashdown MI 550 class D amp into one or two 12" Eden cabs (no horns), for upright i'll sometimes use that ROLAND Cube 60.

picks: i mostly use my fingers....but when i do use a pick, they have to be 2.5 to 3.0 thickness. i suffer P.A.S. so i'm always looking for THE pick. right now that's a $10 John Pearse Fast Turtle. I also like and use V picks.
