Interesting thread. Love the discussion of Sabbath and Iomi. :D

The Beatles set the bar for commercial output and sustained commercial success. In this respect, they really have no equal — because they are the automatic and uncontrived standard for what success looks like. Who else do people always think of before them? Artists might measure their success by any number of other artists, but The Beatles indisputably hold top billing.

This isn’t a reason to like or dislike the Beatles’ catalogue. Just an observation.

They also have something that eludes most bands: a truly fascinating biography. Their rise to the top as a bar band in Liverpool and Hamburg is a classic adventure tale, not just another dull story of too much booze, heroin, and excess. Beatle biographies, including works by Hunter Davies and Philip Norman, hold up under multiple readings. So does Anthology, their autobiography. I always loved the music, but their story is what inspired me to play the guitar and sing.

Just got my copy of The Claypool Lennon Delirium and I gotta say, Sean Lennon is one hell of a musician (guitar, mellotron, drums). Very excellent.

I'm a big fan of those Carl Thompson basses Les favors. Besides being drop dead gorgeous instruments, the cpl i've played practically played themselves.

Thompson goes on the list of early "boutique bass builders".

he later when on to make gtrs w similar styling but i don't think those ever really caught on....then again, it's not like you see every other bassman weilding a CT bass either!

Jerry was alright. I have bad feelings towards that album because it's so popular, but it's mostly just Ler mimicking what Les is playing. I also get in fights online with Primus fans over their two favorite albums, Punchbowl and Animals. That's all they ever talk about. Then most of them trash Antipop, my favorite. Check out a Les bass line when he's got Brain on drums. Totally different approach (in my book).

Renegade or Power Mad.

Yeah. Pork Soda, The Brown Album. Very great, just not so much my favorite in the cannon when you factor in all of those vaudeville numbers and whatnot.

Ler is a bit of an anomaly in hard rock. A guy who can shred like Joe Satriani, yet you have to listen to maybe 3 or 4 songs to get to an example of that.
