OK, Marky-

We be buds but I haven't heard any bluegrass, rock or blues yet.
Would love to hear some of that stuff because I like bluegrass, rock and country (and also play all 3 myself).
Dig in the vault and upload something. I'd love to hear it!! 8)

well, of course we be buds. and i didn't intend the above as any kind of slam or judgement of you!

Hah!! Latinesque Country!!! I love it!!

calypso beat to be exact.

thanks for posting that link, schmed.

i'll get some other bluegrass, rock, acoustic folk, etc stuff up in a day or two. Mere Mortals (my bluegrass band) played a radio show a cpl wks ago and i'll put up a tune or two of that as well.

in the meanwhile...here's some bluegrass from an older lineup of that band.

and here's some white boy blues. i used to play with Curly Joe Harper in a band called Rib House....i'm on bass.

i was listening to a lot of Tower Of Power at the time and thought some of the quicker tunes would work w a Rocco Prestia approach. listening to it now....i'm not so sure!

funny, i didn't have my 6 string yet but felt some of these songs would really benefit from some really low ones so i strung up one of my basses (a 70's JAZZ) in B E A D.

jookeyman wrote:Yeah, I checked out the Mere Mortals practice video you put up w/ you on doghouse but that had more of a Folk vibe to me than Bluegrass. I loved the lady singing but I was waiting for her to cut down w/ that bow but she never went there. Appeared to me to be more of a vocal rehearsal (sparse instrumentation) w/ you keeping time and providing the foundation for the vocalist.

that was the first night she introduced her tune "Love Your Big Muddy".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEVNleRkitY

the sparse arrangement was her idea and what she wanted with the bass carrying the freight. hey, that's NO PROBLEM in MY book! happy to oblige. we've since made room for Bill (Planet Jazz bassist) in the group and i'm back to playing mando and dobro(as in the two vids above). i tell you what...i do miss playing bass on that tune! you're correct...it's not bluegrass but more of a laid back blues.

those other links i posted above are more of a bluegrass vibe and you get to hear fiddle on one of 'em. if you think she sings well (which she does)...you need to hear cut loose on fiddle. whoa.

The blues link isn't working for me but no biggie. Got any rock stuff??

hmmm. i checked the Curly Joe link just now and it directed me there fine. :?

i'll get some R&R posted soon.

Those six songs are absolutely stellar.

The other songs I couldn't make it past 30 seconds without a cringe and a WTF are you thinking when you recorded that........ sorry.

Had to jump back on this.............you gave me a big thumbs up on the Warehouse song, RG.
I know we're all getting to OAS but c'mon man.
BTW- Planet X?? Totally improvised (no banter, no cues), Hoppe's Playday?? Totally improvised after 3:23 and during solo section. Jax Blues?? Guitar totally improvised. Bass line written by me. Forgot The Time?? Melody line, totally improvised.

Didn't see the Warehouse song on your soundcloud.

Can you give me the link where these six songs can be paid for and downloaded. You say improvised, I say "songs from the minds soul" I went back to soundcloud and listened to these six songs again to see if I was talking out my ass........nope..........Steller.

Coincidence?? ...... .

lot of coincidence going down!

i signed on a little while and there was an email waiting for me from Steve, one of the guys in Mere Mortals. he got a phone call last night from the engineer who worked w us on the Mere Mortals video that i shared above "The Crow".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yai-lZiPzWI

the engineer heard Steve on his sunday night radio show and recognized his voice. he contacted him to share that they had submitted our video to some network outlet where it was picked up and shown in 17 different cable access places around the country including some large metro stations in California and NY, Denver, Ohio etc.

you know..it was really easy to go all "Rocco" on that fast stuff with that drummer. he was an absolute KILLER and he's in the top three of all time best i've been lucky enough to play with.

still looking for some good R&R to share with you (and Slacker). i'll get some...promise.

" And as far as a musician sitting down and writing in a specific genre?? Dude, that happens every day. You play what you listen to ( again, relative) and absorb into your mind. I can tell what a musician likes (and listens to) by the music he/she plays. If you like it, it's going to rub off on you like axle grease."

Did you understand that I said thinks about the genre BEFORE you sit down to write a song.

I would imaging that would depend on who you are or how you go about composing something I suppose. I generally begin a lot of my songs with lyrics and have only a cadence in mind when I write a song. Then I think about a melody, and I am not even yet thinking genre. I begin using different tempos to see if it should be fast or slow, and then I will decide on a drum beat. Then I will come up with a bunch of variables in my lead work. And when it comes to the instrumental portion I like to go all over the place either in syncopation or over the top or behind the beat. When I perform an instrumental never do I think about playing it in any particular genre. I just play something and see how it turns out. After I have what I want I will work out the rest. Not once do I think "Genre" in the process. I don't play everything in one genre. A lot of times I begin in one direction and end up in another. My songs generally morph all over the place and even when they are finished they really aren't. I keep changing them.

When I have to post something, they never have a classification to exactly fit what I THINK I'm playing. I play all kinds of crap and I write all kinds of crap. When I do something that turns out particularly crappy, they don't even have a genre called "Crappy" where I could post it where the people who like crappy music can find it.

But I don't listen to music on the radio or MP3. I hear it on the TV during programs, but that is pretty much changes all the time in no particular genre. I haven't sat down and listened to a CD for years. Perhaps that is why I don't do what the guy who listens to a lot of music might do.

I can't even post music on my Bandmix page or hear it from anyone else's page. I can't listen at SoundCloud or any of the other sites. Only SoundClick has a player that will let me play a song, and it is a pain at that. Most sites won't even let me in. None of the "social" sites will let me in. But that's a good thing for both of us. :)

I want a site that has a section called "Just listen to it and see if you like it". No professed genre's allowed. It's just friggin music. Either you'll like it or you won't like it. If you don't like it, I just wasted several minutes of your life that you'll never get back sucka. If you do like it I just snatched up several minutes of your life that you will never get back sucka. It's music.
