realize you vary your tone. I listened to some of your Django Tiger stuff and it was different. My reference was to your more recent electric fretless uploads.
well that brings up a point i meant to address earlier. one of the things that will influence my bass tone is the role the bass is playing in the tune. providing a bed, and anchor, in more of anaccomp mode...yeah nice and fat as will allow....but in those fretless tunes you refer to...each of those were approached as the bass being a more active participant in the conversation so that calls for a little more "personality" in the tone dept!

when i said " i put a lot of thought into my note choices", i think you misconstrued my meaning.....i don't mean that i have what i'm gonna play mapped out ahead of time! (quite the opposite!)
what i mean by that, is in that in the moment that we're reacting spontaneously we ARE making choices about what to play. those are note choices i was referring to!
but yeah, this here'd be a difference.... i don't really choose what i'm playing in advance for any of those genres (i'm speaking mostly in recording mode...but that's very much true for my live playing as well. yeah, if it's a tune i play regularly...then i know what's gonna work on it, and i have some tried and true fallback moves and plans.
but it's that spontaneous thing that keeps my head in the game. like playing the walking line over "Heartaches By the Numbers" and varying how i do that.... where i might pull it back on the next ch or vs to a root fifth "two feel".
it's amazing how much "proper bass accompaniment" you can give and still approach these "simple" songs in different ways (even if it ain't an earth shattering reconception of things!

well, as i sees it, that's where "art lives" and also provides the opportunity for the most creativity. it's where music is most like conversation as you interact in the moment.
my dad has been painting since i was a little kid and every wall in my folks' living room is covered w his paintings. and they're very good. some excellent. but they are very well crafted copies of things he's seen in magazines or brochures. he then renders pretty much a "note for note" copy of it w oils or watercolor. there's a lot of skill and technique required to pull that off and yeah. i'd also call it talent...but as i see it... it's craft. not "art". art is creating something from nothing. and creating music in the moment certainly qualifies as "art" as i see it. now whether it's GOOD art or not, that's another story.
