As long as we're talking about being heard, that includes background singers. if you are singing harmonies remember that they are the harmonies and are not supposed to be as loud as or to overpower the lead vocals. You are known as background singers for a reason - you sing in the background!
Singing duets and singing harmonies are two different things. Duets trade lead vocals back and forth and sing softer harmonies when the other person is singing lead vocal. The harmony is softer than the lead. So you have to move your singing volume back and forth depending upon what part you are singing at the time. Well done, it sounds great. Poorly done, it sounds like crap...don't sound like crap - nobody enjoys that.
The real key to all of this is that everyone playing needs to be aware of how they are sitting in the mix. They need to listen to the overall sound and not just themselves. Good dynamics can make a song sound great!
