occasionally a fat person shows up while browsing history websites photographs (daguereotypes/tintypes), but for the most part mid 1800's era photos prove the people were more in tune with the proper caloric intake needed to maintain a body without indulgence in foodstuffs to placate their minds.. why are there so many fat people strolling around the walmart aisles? has everybody lost control of their minds? ..mind control implemented by obama is the suspect here, more profits for the candy and lard maker companies me thinks, and obama has his hand in it? right? :D :D

Back then people had to eat what was grown locally. There was no infrastructure to deliver Oreos, potato chips and soda pop on a daily basis. People had to do things manually (burning calories). If you wanted to talk to your neighbor, you walked there, or saddled up a horse, or hitched a horse to a wagon and rode over. You don't burn many caloires texting with your thumbs.

And if you look at the combined obese/overweight stats, we do even worse: 65.6 percent of Missourians are either overweight or obese. That makes Skinny Minnies a distinct minority.

So who's the fattest in this Big Fat State? Statistically, the report finds, black Missourians are disproportionately likely to be heavy. Latinos are skinniest; whites are in the middle, and apparently we don't have enough Asians to count, but we're guessing they probably put all of us to shame. People who haven't graduated from high school and those who make $15,000 or less a year are also more likely to be overweight. (Weirdly, the report's authors don't say anything about pregnant ladies -- aren't they the cause of all this trouble?)

Naturally, the report's authors would like to use this announcement to push for policy changes. As they note,

Twenty-nine states not including Missouri limit when and where competitive foods (foods and beverages sold outside of the formal meal programs, through à la carte lines, vending machines and school stores) may be sold beyond federal requirements.

Twenty-six states not including Missouri have now established farm-to-school programs. Five years ago, only New York had a law establishing a farm-to-school program.

Americans have a horrible diet and get almost no exercise at all. Fast food and junk food are all most people eat, and they eat wrong too.

Little or nothing for breakfast, sandwich or junk for for lunch, barely enough to keep going the rest of the day, then pig out for dinner...and how much exercise do we get? Pick up the remote and change channels...not to mention the types of foods people eat even when they do cook. Greasy, fatty, loads of gravy...hydrogenated oils help too, that's a type of fat your body does not know what to do with, unlike butter and animal fat. So it ends up clogging your arteries.

I read a report about this a while back, I don't remember which was the fattest state, but I think Louisiana was #2. Maybe #1...I can't remember.

People are doing the opposite of what they should. Eat nothing pre prepared. I hate TV dinners anyway. Grow your own or hunt and fish for it when possible. Yeah I know apartment dwellers in huge cities are out of luck. They can still buy better than they are now. Get a decent breakfast, a decent lunch that's not junk food then DON'T pig out at dinner, and get some stinkin exercise.

I had to lose weight when I turned 42 I think it was, my metabolism slowed down. I had always been too skinny, all of a sudden I was buying pants 3 inches larger than the 29's I had worn since high school. Had a gut hanging out, didn't like it. I had already cut out most of the greasy and fried food, except when I go to a Chinese buffet...that's still the only time I touch anything fried. Then I started to cut down on the amount I ate at dinner, that was the really tough part. (more later) Then I started to put my boat in the lake and paddle it, working up to 2 miles a day each way. 2 months and I lost around 30lbs. Got my weight down from almost 170 to the 140-145 range and still stay there now. Never was able to top 125 before that and I had to work at it, normal was 115 to 120. I've had to lose weight 2 other times, but only 10-15 lbs.

Eating less - Your stomach changes its physical size according to the amount you eat. Eat a lot, it grows to accommodate all that food. Start eating less and it shrinks accordingly. But when you do that, you STAY hungry ...it really sucks...I had to start bringing a couple of mini candy bars to work for the middle of the day, and sometimes late at night too. But one 2 inch Snickers will keep it at bay for a good while...and you can also use things like baby carrots or broccoli for munchies. And I love both...by the way I'm getting baby corn and carrots out of my garden right now...great stuff...

If you really need to lose weight, start eating nothing but salad for dinner. And get some exercise. Salad has no calories, only the salad dressing.

People gain weight because they take in more calories than they burn off, period. That's why we're a country of fatasses. Junk food diet, no exercise. To lose weight you reverse that. Burn off more than you take in. Simple. But not easy, it takes work and determination.

Had to edit, I forgot this. Pictures taken in Russia from 1909 to 1912, in color. Long before color was available, it was done by taking 3 shots of each with different colored lens filters. Very few fat people here either...

Dayne

Actually the reason is different than has been postulated. There are no pictures of fat people in the 19th Century because that was against the law. Nobody wanted people in the future mocking their culture because so many hogs were staggering around.

Fast forward to now - since everyone seems to agree that Z-poc or the big rock or something bad is fixing to come down - they aren't worried about what future folks might think - so now we photograph 'em no matter how fat they are!

I think it's too easy to blame fast food. The supermarket is a perfect example of why our country is so overweight. Your ancestors never had access to 1% of that variety of food. People need to try to stay close to what their ancestors ate. That's what their body knows how to metabolize.
The best changes I've made in my diet/ caloric intake is to keep servings of meat the size of a deck of cards.
That was not easy, coming from the Texas bbq family I was born into and working in a butcher shop for 4 years.
I had to teach myself to eat a salad at lunch every day. That started with unholy amounts of bleu cheese dressing, more slices of cheese, cheese crumbles, meat, buttery packaged croutons (full of preservatives, artificial flavors, colors....). Fortunately, it didn't take long to ween myself off of that junk. Nowadays, I make a salad for myself and my wife, every day. Or I try to. I've replaced the dressing with Caesar lite, the cheese with some feta crumbles, the meat with pecans or almonds, the croutons are now just plain bread from my toaster and the meat is in my entree.
Then there's the ice cream aisle. I always cruise right by, seeing people just stand there, looking at every brand, every carton, every flavor. That stuff is bad for you and I try to eat it once a month or less. My family and my wife's parents struggle with that, too. Always wanting to eat ice cream after dinner. The mother in law will push it on me, giving me 3 or more choices of flavors/ ice cream bars. I just tell her I'm not feeling the need to eat ice cream on a Tuesday night. Sheesh, lady!

thanks schmed for your reply, this topic was brought about by my trip into wallyworld on Tuesday, coming back from the Fair Play swap meet, it really seemed that everybody I saw was grossly overweight and obese, and now that I posted some facts about Missouri residents that being 68% + of us being obese or overweight, I figured I was there on a "bad day" and even more that 68% of the shoppers were obese, it was like around 85%, and it really bothered me to see it, I thought to myself, don't these people have any control of themselves at all, or do they have no hobbies or activities to keep their mind off of eating food? or is that what soothes their souls, pigging out on potato chips and dip while watching their soap operas, fantasizing some fantasy? which brings me back to 1800's people, and I know for the most part, they had PANTRIES and LARDERS full of food, but maybe were more religious, and knew the scriptures relating to gluttony and actually ate accordingly.. their minds were not out of the spirit's control?.. it could be advertising on TV that's causing the problem, - a 20% increase in obesity in the last 20 years? in Mo. - it's a spiritual matter I think
