why is standard the standard?


perfect 4th flows like the river.

robert fripp plays in 4ths.... or at least he used to and was real big at championing that.

like just about everyone else i learned "standard" tuning and though single note lines lay out fine for me on instruments tuned straight across all the way in 4ths (like my 6 string bass BEADGC) ....chords, though playable in that tuning just don't lay as well for me as they do in "standard".

since i play mandolin (tuned in 5ths) i've also experimented tuning bass (my upright) in 5ths....there are a handful of oddball bassists (Red Mitchell may be the most prominent) who play this way. i didn't like it. didn't like it at all! Red on the other hand absolutely KILLED!

In EADGCF, you coudlnt' play a full 6-string Emajor chord, or 5/6 strong Amajor chord - without barring. Barring an A major or minor-based chord woudl only work by muting the high E string. Barring an Emajor based chord, would have to be done as a thumb-wrapped major 7, and you coudlonly do eminor based bar chords by muting the high E.
In DADCGF, in would be easy enough to play dmajor, minor, and Dsus2 (lazy D9), but Dsus4 would be tough to switch to fast (thinking of all those songs that have a Dmajor-Dus4-Dsus2 repeat goign on for accents).
