funny i almost included felix, and jack bruce but got lazy!

stanley is a monster and certainly did much for the visibility of bass players. we saw him at Jazz At The Bistro a small St. Louis club not too long ago. we sat about 15 feet from him and it was as amazing as you might imagine. he only played upright and i doubt you could slip a business card anywhere on the neck between his strings and fingerboard!

John Wetton is also one of my favorites, that Asia crap notwithstanding. Monster player and singer.

big jaco fan here. i guess i'd been thinking more in terms of R&R bass players (why i didn't mention S Clarke).

he's hugely misunderstood by a lot of people. too many just see him a showboating, melody playing, chops meister... but what these people miss is that his groove was just ridiculous and he could lay down some of the best butt shaking grooves anywhere.

...the stuff he did w joni mitchell on her albums "Hejira" and "Shadows and Light", oh man.

these versions of her tune "Black Crow" are pretty good examples of jaco playing for the song AND playing w some personality! dig those harmonics!

interesting to hear the liberties he took reharmonizing the chords when they later performed it live....

Very famous bands or musicians you don't like? How'd we get to favorite bassists? Isn't that a new topic?;
