Hello all. Since everyone is on here to promote themselves and their art. What are some of the methods everyone uses to create their songs. Maybe what someone posts can help someone else further their craft. Any Ideas?

Inspiration, then rewriting!

I've started using the Musesmuse forums for early song feedback. Had been a member of a local songwriter circle that met once a month - bouncing ideas and songs-in-development off of other players can really help honing your songwriting skills. Often times, one is "too close" to the song's topic to be objective about the song itself.

I just write instrumental stuff. I can't really sing and play,
never got around to looking for a vocalist.
When I write songs, the process starts out as just bouncing different
chord progressions off each other, seeing what fits together.
Then I come back later and just see if what I wrote down makes any sense.
Giving it some time to forget it helps me approach it with "fresh ears",
I guess you could say. Then I can start to build those together into a song.
Even a chord progression that makes no sense can be softened up by
adding the right bass line. Then you're on your way.
