General Music Chat

I’m in Music hell.
I’m a composer, and I need a clear mind to create new music.
My next door neighbors have friends over, and they’re blasting out rap.
When there are any notes at all, they repeat endlessly, no changes . . .
To make matters worse, the sometimes listen to endlessly repetitive Spanish polkas, complete with accordions . . .
. . . sheesh . . . Rap, tubas, and accordions!

Any thoughts on how it could be worse?

Yeah, they could be your roommates! Nice summer day, grab an acoustic guitar, head to the nearest park or other restful outdoor spot.

Whew. That really redlines the dreadful-ometer! Rap with Tubas. I'd confess to the Reichstag fire to make it stop!

That really sucks, and unfortunately smokin better stuff doesn't even help... Then again nothing but a shotgun helps rap...and that seems to be illegal...

I have no idea what to suggest, a call or three to the cops for disturbing the peace maybe but then you have a feud going...Fortunately the only time I had a neighbor into loud music (black guy in Houston) he was very cooperative about it, we'd get together and party a bit now and then and if I simply asked politely he'd turn it down. Usually he kept it to a bearable volume, and no late night loudness, so we didn't have much trouble at all. Same applied to me though, if I ran my stereo a bit on the loud side, he'd either know he could turn his up for a while or if need be he'd come ask me to turn down. No problem...we got along well, I could practice when I wanted to with no interference, so it worked out OK.

Alan and Eric - you're both in Connecticut, find a mutual place to meet and play to get away from the neighborly distractions!

I had a similar problem in school.
I'd be writing, but the dorm music was so loud...

I ended up using the biggest ear muffs I could get to blot out the music.
Unfortunately/fortunately I was left with the bass line. (couldn't get rid of it)
So I started to write to the bass line(s) I could hear and adjusted them very slightly.

One of the best tunes I ever got came from G+R's CIVIL WAR, but only the bass line which I modified and actually got something original and decent.

Now I hear people's HUGE music and I smile because I still have those ear muffs, I just have to make sure to put a couple of walls between us so I can just hear the bass line and nothing else.

Good idea. I used to attempt to play along to the band in the studio next to mine. If you were both blasting, it wouldn't work. If they were blasting it wouldn't work, but sometimes they would be rehearsing a stripped down coffee house set, and I could play drums or guitar or bass along with them. I have no idea what they thought of that.

Who cares what they thought... that's the whole point.

If they give you lemons, make lemonade.

Yeah, I tried ear plugs, covered up with hearing-protection ear muffs. it doesn't work; it's like turning up the volume on the bass, eh?
