Now, what cover songs should I do???? Give me some suggestions here guys. What songs do you think would fit my voice???? I like your input and appreciate it. I do like some country, but it has to be the newer stuff and I went and jammed last night with some friends and I know that I really can't handle all that old stuff that sometimes they like to do. I like new. So............ give me something new for my voice and you will see me smile  and HowlinJ, yes, I know, I will quit whinnin'. :x And thanks for you guys likin' me just like bandmix does, that's nice, I hope??
Hit me with your best shot guys, I want to hear these suggestions!!! cover songs !!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~

GuitarGal, nice songs on your profile. You have a low key voice, it is very pretty. But I am not sure what to tell you to cover... Maybe Janice Joplin, depending on how much power your voice has (I cannot tell from these songs on your profile). You will do fine with country music, that is for sure, your voice fits it.

It mainly depends on what you are comfortable with, I could tell you to even do Patsy Cline, but that may not be your style. You need to cover what you feel you can handle and what you feel is within your range.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

Guitargal,
I like the kind of stuff you're already doing. I agree with G.A. that you should stay within the vocal range you are comfortable with. I believe it's good for singer-songwriters to cover other peoples songs. It may expand your horizons. Check out Joan Armatrading .She has a beautiful low voice. Billie Holiday is one of the best of all time, and she never needed to strain her vocal chords screeching high notes. Go with what you got. Keep up your enthusiasm and you'll be fine.

Thank you so much, you are so kind and have some good advice. I have sang some Patsy Cline, " I go out walkin' after midnight" and it fits my voice fine. I sang it at a jam session last night. Billie Holiday stuff would also work for me. You guys are my inspiration and support line.
Thank you again. HowlinJ, I will check out the other lady you named and get some more inspiration. I do have a very strong and powerful voice so there is a lot of stuff I could do as long as the range is good for me.

As always!

Hmm...not a bad suggestion.

She has some Joni Mitchell in her voice. I think that one is right up her alley. Kind of Folk Rock, coffee house style.

Joni might be too high for her, but alot of that is falsetto. How's your falsetto GGal?

Maybe you could try something like "Peace In The Valley" Loretta Lynn Style.

I couldn't find a sample of it.. But I think this is close to your voice..

It's a good song too.

Some girl named Emily doing an impersonation.. But I think you can pull off some Loretta..

I was serious when I suggest "I'm no angel". It's an easy tune and I get the feeling that you could do a great job with it.

Yes, I think so.

Sad to say, I have heard so many tunes I don't refer to them by artist, just by name of tune.

That way when we steal from everyone, it's just the tune and not their style when they did it.

I think I think it was Allman, I know it was a male singing that. I also know it's a good tune, easy to cover and gets a good crowd response.

Last time we did it, we slowed it way down. I am not sure if anyone knew we stole it/covered it. LOL

Hey Capn,

I thought so... ..Thats a tough one to get the right timbre...Greggs got that thick husky timbre even in the higher registers..I worked it up when it first came out but never did do it justice so I dropped it...That would fit her key range...Most women Ive worked with dont realize their power till they push themselves to sing in higher keys...Same is true for guys... Tunes I used to drop a whole step, I now sing in their original keys and some higher...SO, slap ya a capo on the 2nd fret there GG and lets hear those tunes again..

Thank you so much Irminsul, I think the Nora Jones suggestion is good, I really like her music and sound and I believe I could do that style real nice. I'll have to find the song Captain suggested and you guys know that I'll be checkin' out a lot of songs from the artists you've suggested. You are so kind to me and I appreciate your time to give me your input.

I found the song "I'm no angel" one version by Greg Allman and another completely different version by Dido. I like the song and will learn it. Also found some Nora Jones songs. I love her voice, I do have one of her first CD's and I love it.
I'm also going to keep hunting for musicians to form a band to do cover songs and some original music, like HowlinJ says, my songs sound pretty good and there are a lot more where those came from. I just need some talented people to co-op with me on my songs to bring life into them and create something from the humble beginning of what I have written. My songs are just my voice and me playing my guitar and it's the other instruments that bring life and I need the creativity of each band member to breathe the life into the song through their instrument. I hope that we can create together as a group effort and have fun doing it.
That's about it!

Guitargal,
If your still looking to fill out your set list with potential songs, you might also want to check out some of Chrissie Hynde's (the Pretenders) softer stuff . The song "Thin Line" comes to mind.
Also "Maria Muldaur" , older Joni Mitchell (you may find her new stuff a bit too jazzy), Carol King , and don't forget those great old Dion Warwick songs. Hell, there's no shortage of material you could sing well. Don't limit yourself to older or newer songs.
