General Music Chat

I was working on lyrics for several songs, and being very productive.
And I started working on this one song which I’d started 2 years ago.
Wow; Zim-zam, all the pieces ere falling into place!
It was a song about someone down on his luck, and I was coming up with all the right things. The guy I was describing was coming to life (in my minds eye), and I was building on it.
And what I’d seen as an “okay” song was becoming one of the best songs I ever wrote. It was actually moving me to near tears, which is extremely rare for me.
‘Rare?’ Hell, maybe once every 3-5 years . . .
Yet, I was purposefully relinquishing emotional self-control, to keep the emotional flow going, to see/hear/feel/write the right things.
That’s what it takes, sometimes, to write a good song.
But then every 5 - 10 minutes or so, someone started interrupting me with irrelevancies; all it was, was day to day unimportant crap.
I was writing a strongly emotional song, with a very specific set of emotions, and I was in the groove.
When I went back - my new, still forming ideas were gone.
All that was left for me, emotionally, was a feeling of irritation, of being robbed of my creativity, of disappointment.
. . . pissed . . .
Man, I'll tell you: there's NO WAY you can write a song if someone keeps on interrupting; you must be alone!
Anyone else run into this?

Not me I usually work when I'm driving... but yeah I can get more done without interruptions... like most things.
Finding or getting into the "groove" is usually very short pieces of time and then it's gone anyway. But there will always be more to come.

I do that as well. I got tired of writing on my arm or on a napkin while driving so I actually have a note book in my car. Thankfully I don't have to drive as much these days so I can actually work in my pseudo-studio or at my desk.

I've found that once I have the structure in my head I can play the song all the way thru in my head which allows me to 'hear' the changes as if I were plugged in.

if someone is around I will drive them crazy humming singing melody lines, but these days when the muse hits I go with it

I think its best to be by yourself when you are creating music

I just 'tune out' the distractions. Quiet time in my house is at a premium, I usually use it for recording.

I pretty much live alone these days and have my great room set up with all my different instruments, so when I get on a roll with a song I just hammer on thru it.
