For valentines my wife got me a video entitled "From The Earth To The Moon" it is a 5 disk semi documentary and tells the stories of the men, women, and children who lived breathed and manufactured from the power of human will one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. I have lived my entire life within 10 miles of the Johnson Space Center. These videos bring back a flood of emotion the country was experiencing. Thru the 60's from the famous speech JFK delivered commiting the resources of this country to see us thru the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs!

Wasn't it all faked? Ever see the movie 'Capricorn One'?

It was all quite an achievement, with a lot of guts, and luck, involved. Too bad the government decided that funding 'police actions' (wars) was a better use of our tax dollars than the space program.

The spinoff technologies from the space program are one of the things I truly believe have made our country strong economically! I can't say enough about this series directed by Ron Howard and Produced by Tom Hanks. If you love the U.S. space program I highly advise watching it. Like I said it is a 5 disk series so it is long and I am just into the 2cd disk but it has captivated me. When not playing guitar I'll be watching this!

Sounds like a great documentary. Unfortunately, I think so many people feel space exploration is a waste of money because they don’t know enough about the benefits gained. The info is out there if you go look, but I think it could be publicized much more.

I had an Uncle who went down to Florida during that time. He brought back a bunch of models, one the full mockup of a Saturn 5 rocket. The fact that we scrapped the most powerful booster there was, boggles my mind. So much development and research simply written off. They say that with over a million moving parts that even a 1% failure rate would be a disaster. Did any of you guys watch the Apollo Soyuz mission? I though that was very cool in a time when both countries really needed to step back for a bit.

Anyway here is our future military presence in space: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_X-37 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyus_%28spacecraft%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salyut_3#On-board_gun

Did you guys know that the Soviet space station had a gun?
“The Salyut 3, called "civilian" station, was equipped with a "self-defence" gun, which had been designed for use aboard the station, and whose design is attributed to Nudelman.[1] Some accounts claim the station was equipped with a Nudelman-Rikhter "Vulkan" gun, which was a variant of the 23 mm Nudelmann aircraft cannon, or possibly a Nudelmann NR-30 30 mm gun.”

Not quite the promising vision Kennedy talked of. Generals are a lot like lawyers in a way, were as they have no problems perpetuating their own importance through conflict. It’s amazing to me, the reckless abandon our politicians pander the military. I hope Virgin gets their crap together and we can start making space travel somehow commercial, versus countries shooting at each other in a vacuum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Galactic

Excellent topic J, I loved that documentary. :) Hey once I got to meet John Glen at a party, it was an absolute surprise and I was flabbergasted, so didn’t have a friggin thing to say. I wish I had that five minutes back.

I give Ivan points on that one. I always wondered why the hell our astronauts weren't packed?

I didn't want to fight the Ruskis up there but what about Aliens? There be dragons, and so on.

As an early sci fi reader I felt cheated that we hadn't developed ray guns for the guys.

They've got 'ray guns' up there - lasers mounted in satellites. Back in the Apollo days they didn't have the laser technology and standard firearms wouldn't work well - 'equal and opposite reaction' - firing any missile in one direction propels the firer (guy in a suit or space capsule) in the other direction.
