For me, life is too short for venom. It seems like a pretty useless tool for conversation and like a cheap guitar that won't stay in tune, it rarely gets the job done so why use it at all? No one was ever lifted up by reading, listening to, or spewing venom. When we spew it, we tend to get it all over ourselves anyways.

As musicians we all have a fire in our bellies and good music, like good sex gives us a vacation from the fire for a little while. This fire makes for some lively conversations and debates at times but at the end of the day, it's really just a difference of opinion. I tend to be more conservative than most of the musicians I play with (some actually graduated from Cal Berkeley for crying out loud). We joke about the fact that we cancel each other out at the polls and then simply lay it down and play.

I can forgive their liberalness because I know they are wrong.

As to the OP poll, I have used it on occasion but usually when the venom starts flying, I just forgive them and turn the page. If this looks like you, maybe give it a rest:

as for being upset...

let's see....racism does upset me. and a few other things no doubt. but in general i don't get "upset" by anyone who has different politics or religious beliefs than me. viva la difference.

i might get disappointed in some if their politics cause them to be homophobic, quick to draw conclusions of others different than themselves, or if they lack compassion for those worse off than themselves.


as for turning off Rosie O'donnel when she comes on ...that's exactly how i feel about Televangelists and Forumevangelists spouting the words of god and then offhandedly calling people "idiots", "fools", "morons", and worse because someone has the gall to disagree with them on politics or religion.

that's a real turnoff.

Politics, as a topic in rock and roll, is a close third to religion, which is right behind sex.

So it seems naive to think any of us could separate them. The left puts their political messages in protest songs, while the right does it on talk radio.

I see no reason why the most important issues of our day have to be ignored in a discussion group, just because we're all musicians.

But it is sad when we see each other as enemies instead of brothers, even wayward ones.

To me, politics, religion, sex, music....it's all the same topic. Life.

I've been thinking about this culture of ours a lot over the last few days. I was watching old TV shows on YouTube this week (snowed in): George & Gracie, Amos & Andy, Jack Benny...

What really grabbed me was how nice everyone was - it was a shock, and an embarrassing one for a man my age to see how far down we've fallen in my lifetime - I own some of it.

The slowness of the pace was strange too - we're always running these days.
