(ok except flamenco, Paco De Lucia takes that one... but only because Steve Vai likes to keep his nails short :D )

But seriously....any "top guitar player" list w/o Steve Vai needs to be questioned

cheers!

play jazz better than Wes? i seriously doubt it.

classical gtr better than Segovia, or Parkening? doubtful

blues better than Albert King? highly doubtful

greasy soul better than steve cropper or pops staples? unlikely

slide better than derek trucks or warren haynes? c'mon

classic rock riffage better than Page? (scratches head)

flatpick better than tony rice or doc watson? no dice

gypsy jazz better than tchvalo schmidt? no cigar

now, i will give you that vai does HIS schtick very well. he's just never impressed me as being an all around gtrst or one who plays w enough soul for my tastes.

Agreed. Vai is not my guy. He's got the shredder chops but when I see him play it's never about the song, it's all about MEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

That is one of his best emotive ballads Mike but still not my cup-o-tea. Different strokes for different folks but I have a hard time listening to Vai. I never really liked his tone or his antics and would much rather listen to Satch, Andy Timmons, SRV, EVH, Hendrix or Jeff Beck given the choice. Merely a matter of taste preferences I suppose.

I think Steve Vai's best work to date was with Zappa when he was carefully directed by Frank who really understood how to yoke a musicians strengths. YMMV

Steve Vai's practice schedules are legendary(apparently Steve didn't listen to Segovia and his 8 hr rant).

No Jimmy Page? Listen to Physical Graffiti and tell me which of those lead lines Chet's gonna play. He can't his fingers aren't quick enuf. Jimmy can't either anymore, but he attained that level once. To be good u constantly have to stay in practice.

If Vai wanted to or tried he would top them all.... a lot of the top guitarists and bassists will say that. Guys like Stu Hamm who's practically jammed with the best players around admitted Vai's tops 'em all and it aint even close

Except maybe for Nigel Tufnel! Goooo Spinal Tap!

Cheers!

HOW COME SLACKER WASN'T INCLUDED!

I guess cause he hasn't sold a gaziilion copies.

I have to say, there is no such thing as the one greatest guitarist.

Every one has mentioned some awesome players... Guitar is one of those amazing instruments that allow the individual to find a new way to place their own mark on the way they play guitar.

I have always, after you get past the basics, found that amazing.
