Recording a song on CD, or making a video? Seems like the radios dead and the video is just starting to come into its own. Don't you get much more exposure with a video, then just a recording?

Record the song, then make a video to promote it. Despite smart phones that will let people stream videos, as evan says, most people ar enot watching, only listening.
If you can shoot a video while recording, then synch it all up after mixing the audio (like Neanderpaul does), it's pretty easy to do. I've done that once, but didn't like the fact that I was wearing headphones and reading glasses when doing the vocal tracks! So I'll usually do a 'lip-synch' video after doing the audio mix.
Also - as far as shooting a video, unless you've got a camera that lets you plug in external mics, the sound is not going to be all that good.

I feel we must defer to the fact of diminished span of attention.
Technology allows for 'surfing' while listening.
I'd believe the average consumer rarely watches a full video.

Really depends on your intent... If it's sales, you need to record high quality.
A video is probably a good tool for marketing your image and sound so it can possibly get you gigs. No close ups though

If you have a good tune with a sh*t video, that's bad but not awful.

If you have a sh*t tune with a good video, that's awful.

Your music can survive a bad video, but it can't survive if it's garbage to begin with.

I say a video with an audio is the best if you are drop dead gorgeous.. the people you will be vying for with their dollars are basically a young and pretentious group.. if you are cool looking you will sell albums/cds/ streams/ no matter how bad it sounds (as long as it's in key however)

If you have a great hit song and you want maximum exposure you probably need both. Get a really good recording done and then do a theme video to draw attention to the song. Something like this works well:

I hate it when a video is made JUST to promote a song.
The best videos are artforms in their own right.
If you've got good ideas for a video, sure go for it.
But, if not, just play the music.

Yep, you can get much more exposure.
Youtube has a reach that something like reverbnation can only dream of. For one, it has a larger, worldwide user base, and secondly, when people are on youtube, they are there to be entertained in general and can stumble on to your video even if they didnt set out to hear music in the first place.

It can't hurt by putting a video or two together.
It won't necesarily get popular or blow up, but it sure can in a hurry.

Hey gtzip, how's it going, I agree, but I agree with what everyone is saying here, but you hit the nail on the head. People are watching utube to be entertained, my old lady now has the computer hooked up to the bigscreen(I don't have a clue how), and I watch videos everynite, I call out what I want to hear and she types it in and we watch(and we usually watch till the end). Look into the future this will be entertainment soon, no satellite or cable (why have it) all are entertainment streaming to us over the phone lines, and routed thru our computer. It's coming, who knows what form it will eventually take?

You know it's hard to stump utube, it's a game I play. Tried to find some sort of video to and old band from the early 80s called "Sparks", I'm pretty sure the song was Naked Women Naked Man, but couldn't find it. I've stumped it only 1 or 2 other times. I believe this is where entertainment is going.
