Hello.

Nobody wants America to be renamed the Peach State. And I doubt the Peach State is really guilty of slavery. As I posted previously on BandMix, the symbol of the "Rebel Flag" is know better as the State Flag of Georgia.
Now, Dr. John McLoughlin is known as the Father of Oregon. A portion of American Highway 99E is know by his name. It is McLoughlin Boulevard.
A portion of McLoughlin Boulevard, leading into Downtown Portland, has been renamed "Martin Luther King Junior."
I can't agree with the name of this "preacher" replacing the name of the McLoughlin Family, on a sign near my hometown! Frankly, Martin Luther King Junior isn't really the most important figure in all of American History.
Proper holidays are for all people. And, I am an Oregonian in protest of the celebration of Martin Luther King Junior day!
Happy Holidays! Have some fun!

Sincerely,

Robert Lee Kumpf

Whether you agree or disagree with MLK day as a holiday or not, the fact is quite clear that the United States was in a tumultuous period of time during King's lifetime. During the 60's this country was on the very edge of sliding into a civil war. MLK had a giant voice of reason and peace, much more so than any President, and certainly more so than the Black Panthers or Malcolm X, who easily could have led us into massive bloodshed were it not for the calming voice of reason MLK represented. Whether his birthday is worthy of a national holiday is up for debate among some, but we celebrate Columbus Day for a guy who "discovered America"despite aboriginal peoples living here for tens of thousands of years.
Your not thinking MLK is deserving of a holiday or highway named afte him, well I beg to differ. We have "holy days" which frankly are most dubious of the appelation. Presidents Day, Columbus Day, even New Years Day? How "holy" are these?

Martin Luther King Jr. maybe may not be THE most important person in American history ... but he is one of the most important and influential people in American history, at a time that also makes him large in World History.

Your ndifference, or ignorance, of that fact does not alter his stature for others.

I agree about President's Day - I was ok with George Washington's Birthday though... 8)
