I have a few Palestinian friends who would rather have killed him themselves with a hammer. Arafat, and all terrorist leaders, are brutal thugs to their own people and embezzling all the aid money sent to help these poor people.

JFK certainly wasn't the best pres we ever had, and definitely had plenty faults, like the constant womanizing. Read "The Dark Side of Camelot" sometime.

But he did do some good things. Probably most notable was not blinking when Khrushchev (SP?) did. In the end he had "back channel" communications going with the Russians, and was also secretly opening peaceful diplomatic talks with Castro.

CIA was pissed, he didn't send in air support in the Bay of Pigs invasion, Mafia was pissed because Bobby was hounding them and had already put several in the slammer, so plenty animosity to go around for all.

He did get us into Viet Nam, but in an advisory capacity only, (advice and training) he never wanted US troops on the front lines. When he was killed he had already issued an order to get 1000 troops out by the end of 1963 and the rest (17,000 total) by the end of 1965. Johnson of course reversed that, no sense not making more money...

Say what you want Johnson was absolutely evil. 1st time I ever saw him was that weekend, that was my first thought, still is. I was in 3rd grade and knew nothing about any of it, didn't even know who the president was, we hadn't got that far yet in school.

I've always thought JFK was the last president we ever had that wasn't an outright crook. And he was no angel, but he did try to do the right thing, even when the rest of the govt was against him. One of the main things I thought was ill advised was leaving most of his advisors out of the loop and doing things with just him and Bobby at the helm.

When the Cuban Missile Crisis was in full swing, was when he did his best though, the whole group of military advisors, generals, and so forth screaming to attack Russia, he said nope and got it solved through diplomatic means. Khrushchev blinked...I can't imagine what that was like, one wrong move and the whole world is destroyed...geez that's heavy...and he pulled it off.

I've thought for a long time he was killed by the mafia, probably with CIA help. Somebody had to let them know the parade route in advance...several mafia heads were recorded in wiretaps talking about it, Ruby was up to his eyeballs in mafia buddies, Oswald had links to the mafia, his uncle was a bookie for Carlos Marcello, who wanted JFK gone really bad...mainly to get Bobby out of power. Once Johnson took over Bobby was not much of a threat, Johnson and the Kennedys hated each other, Johnson would be glad to put Bobby behind a desk. Bobby once called him an ogre...

Anyway, I think this country would be much different if one shot had missed, JFK had his faults no doubt, but he was taking us in a good direction in general.

I tend to agree about JFK - I liked Reagan, (Kinda) but by then it was too late to fix this country.

When our wonderful leaders expanded Nato after the collapse of the USSR I knew we were screwed. Such a wonderful opportunity to be friends with a former enemy, and stop nurturing a war machine upon which we spend as much as the rest of the world combined.

I don't believe the USA to be fixable without massive turmoil, and probably a lot of bloodletting. Countries, like people, tend to go hungry when they run out of money. That time is approaching here. That doesn't please me one bit but while it all crumbles I'm trying to do my best and enjoy the blessings God has given me.

To Glen's point: I will obviously talk politics on occasion but what I don't expect, is to ever change anyone's mine. Nor do I call people who don't agree with me nasty names. It's pointless, and tends to detract from the message.

I suppose I should have been more clear - the political 'discussions' with all the name calling really don't make it for me. I've found it a good rule to not say things on the web that I wouldn't say in person. Part of it for me is that I'm a fairly big guy and have always had a dread of being perceived as a bully.

If he only did one thing right, that was it. He was a womanizer long before Clinton, and not entirely a great President. I believe his assassination elevated his Presidency to heights that really didn't exist. He barely won the Presidency and quite possibly would have been a one term president.
He was the closest thing to equal rights at the time. He had votes in a bag that can't be quantified. Unless you consider Johnson's re-election under the same path, which lead us to words we can identify historically with the times, such as "de-segregation", or "bussing" that we can relate to their origin.
