And I have to correct myself, it was at Mandalay Bay, not the MGM. Keep in mind this is a modern Country artist. Now in my opinion, this is the best I've ever heard this song. It's just my opinion. But that doesn't mean I'm trying to insult Ann (or you). There's a good reason that Heart was being honored at this event along with Ozzy, Phil Collins and ZZ Top. I think it was well deserved. Not to mention, I've heard Ann described as a "Rock Diva" before. The word Diva isn't just synonymous with Whitney and Diana Ross.
My point was that it's obvious Gretchen can sing anything hard-rock, but she chose a different avenue that was more lucrative to her career. There are a lot of female singers who are diverse enough to be able to sing in more than one genre, but if given the choice, rarely will they choose Rock music as their avenue. Because the grass is greener on the other side.
As far as Christina Scabbia goes.. As long as she stays in the genre she's in, she will probably never be considered as big of a powerhouse female artist in the music industry whether she can sing as good as any of them or not. Rock music just doesn't sell as much as R&B, Rap, or Country on a consistent basis. It really wouldn't be because " the evil men of the music world are keeping her from succeeding". I'm sure Christina is comfortable with her lifestyle, and really doesn't care anyway.
If you and I were agents trying to get record deals for our clients from the same record company, you could pitch Christina Scabbia all night long. But if I walked in with Alicia Keys, guess who's getting the bigger contract without hesitation. The revenue she generates is astronomical.
So I'll give Christina Scabbia her props for sticking with the genre she loves. She's not compromising her position or her passion. I'll agree with you that she can sing. And I do like lacuna Coil. Although I don't agree that she can hang with the female artists of the top selling genres, it's my opinion, and it's subjective.. I'm certainly not trying to insult you.
Either way, female artists don't become as big as they are by "not being respected by men". If the talent is there, it will be respected by both genders and nurtured to succeed (or exploited, depending on who you're dealing with).
