I agree with the general consensus. Talk to them, let them know you'll be playing elsewhere, call you when they have something.

I suspect I may soon be in a similar situation. Things going on I'm not crazy about, I may walk out before long. We'll see, but I'm not happy about being almost ready to book and they bring in the guy who didn't show up for practice the 1st 2 times, has a very long history of being late...1 to 2 hours late...and they've already told me they have problems getting him to learn the guitar parts right...1st time he tries to tell me he's playing lead on a song I busted my ass to learn...because he recorded it...I'm outta there..

So I may be in a very similar situation before long and trying to figure out a way to walk off and still not burn any bridges...but I won't tolerate someone with a long history of non reliability, can't or won't play the parts right, shows up to take band pictures without a guitar...when we recorded Southern Cross we waited 2 hours for this guy to show up. Over an hour next time. 1st 2 rehearsals he didn't show up at all. Same thing 10 years ago when he did the recording for our previous band, 1 1/2 hours late, 2 months before we could actually hear the damn thing.

Am I wrong?

Sit them down for a talk. Take the other gig. Try not to burn any bridges in the process.

Well Jeff I've played in 4 different bands this year and I've decided to put my own group with the best players I can find. Most of the bands seem to have lack of focus and no practice ethic, and don't u have to have both.

This new band is a southern rock band so we're making our setlists with at least 5 southern rock or new country tunes, 3 newere tunes and 2 kickass rockin tunes to make up a 9 or 10 song set. Trying to project a southern rock image long hair long beards and cowboy hats, we've been working on a band name that says southern rock, ( I can always pick a name for the last band I was in better then the current band ie Diet Coke Suckin Bitches, or CellarQueer)

You've been around bands along time maybe it's time to put one together to your specifications.

It's so funny how we talk about a band like it's our wife or something.

There's no reason to even talk to them about it, imo. You go out and do something else. If/when they want to play again, there will be something to talk about.

In the meantime there is no reason to get upset about it, or have a grievance conference either. It is what it is. They are still your buds and you'll probably play in another 4 bands together before y'all die.

Next!?

wise words there, ted.

i have a few people in my life that had i not shared some very special musical moments with them, i would have nothing to do with. but, because of the history we do share.....i'm willing to overlook (but not completey forget or ignore) some otherwise questionable misdeeds on their part.

i bet i'm not alone in this regard.

I am seriously considering this Lynard. I did run a band called Cruise Control for 5 years and that really isn't any better. I got tired of doing everything i.e. taxes, bookings, p.a. ego's, website, it can be a logistical nightmare. I decided to play in other folks bands and they like having me because I have done what they are doing and I can be very supportive!

Good advise Ted, thats kind of what I am planning on doing.
