My cover band Dover Soul arranged a version of The Allman Brother's "Whipping Post" last night and it turned out pretty darned good. I had doubts about covering that song, it has a ton of organ and harmony guitars but we pulled it off.

We are now booked for the rest of the year and into the next at a place that just reopened after remodeling. They also want us two Thursdays in November, which will be rough but doable. At one point we need to bring up the subject of money (we need more of it lol) but it's good to have the band established and developing a reputation and following.

Jimmy is that posted on your site? I love the Allman bro. And would like to hear your version. Constantly increasing your pay is always my advise. That's why we now get $1000.00 a night when we play and we did it the same way you guys are doing it!

No we just learned it last night. Once things slow down a little I want to record a few covers, maybe that one. We're a long way from $1000 a night but we'll keep working on it!

Thanks Bro. and that is split between 4 guys! You can make money playing music you just have to think of it as a business because that is exactly what it is. If you think of it as a hobby and something you do for fun that's fine. When I have done that in the past I didn't ask for enough pay when booking and club owners tend to think you are a hack and not very good if you low ball your price going in just to get your foot in the door.

Covers is where the money is at! I tried the original thing I still write and record in my home studio. The only thing originals ever got me was heartache! Oh and $40.00 a night PHYT!

Jimmy I love Whipping Post, no recording but in AYM, we would play the first two verses, then when the guitar break hits, I would go into Heartbreaker by Zep, all the way thru the guitar solo, then go back into the them of Whipping Post, do the big walk up and finish it out.

We have an Aint Yo Mama gig in Oct booked for $800, better than our usual $600.

The other group Ive been playing some with, we get $100 a man, so its not as good as what I did on my own, but my AYM band has an old following and brings people to gigs that stay and buy lots to drink.

Haley I think I saw where that band that plays in Memphis, No Control was back down your way this past weekend, cant remember the name of the club. There must be a pretty good club scene down that way. I think they pay better than up my way these days

Yes John the music scene down here is pretty good. That is because the economy is doing so well. People have money to go out and party. It surprises me that a lot of folks down here are willing to play for $100.00 a man and these are pretty damn good bands. They haven't figured out or they just dont care that they are leaving money on the table?

All things considered, what with real-estate, taxes, wages, utilities ETC, those clubs must be making a brutal killing on alcohol sales and cover charges.

The intro to "Whipping Post" is in 11. I told my drummer I didn't know there was going to be math lol.
