I've got a lot of connections to George. He was from my hometown, Vidor TX. He helped a few other local boys get into the biz like Mark Chestnutt, Tracy Byrd, & Clay Walker.

My grandpa said that he used to pick up George hitchhiking drunk at age 12 (typical Vidorian) and taught George how to play guitar.... my uncle Robert played fiddle with him in a local band before running off to Nashville to play with Webb Pierce in the early 50s. George came there afterward.

And I've also got a cousin who looks and sings suspiciously like George. My Aunt was rumored to have had an affair with him.

And finally, for a short time we owned the property next to where he and Tammy Wynette lived out on hwy 1131

Ah rest in peace, George. Vidor will miss ya.

Geroge had vocal abilities that just wouldn't quit, and he knew how to use them.

Twenty five years ago I was driving through LA and listening to Hank Jr sing about how 'all his rowdy friends had settled down...' Including George Jones.

The song finished and the news came on - Jones had just been arrested in LA for having a pistol and some cocaine in his car! Not so very settled down eh?

I played for a while in a country outfit called Billy Carroll Whiteman and the Countrymen. Billy's claim to fame was that he'd gotten drunk with George Jones in Jones' Cadillac with the steer horns on the front. 8)

Jones is / was certainly one of my favorite country artists. RIP and a job well done.
