I use both tone channels for performance and recording. Also, I use my amps' great tube tone for distortion. I feel that having the right amount of gain where you have a lush overdrive but still have a string quality sounds great. Reverb and delay are the two effects I use the most.

Jerry - good to see you back. You always seem to stick to music and ignore the other noise!

Hi Mike! Sorry I haven't been around much. I have been involved in several recording projects, a four city tour and teaching Music Theory at Northeastern Illinois univ.

The good news is that I have a new band with recordings. I should have some new materials posted here in the near future.

Take care.

One of the reasons I can't use a traditional pedal board is that I'm both an effects junkie as well as a distortion and OD snob. I could spend thousands on pedals, and have boards 10 feet wide and still not be happy, which is why I use rack modellers and midi controller pedals. Playing in the coverband, I pretty much use one heavy jcm900 type, one heaver type using a dual rec model, and then a simple OD.

I personally prefer OD vs. distortions- I like a really smooth drive, and distortion to me is too crackly, but I do like the gain from distortions, so it's a mixed bag. I also love cleans and can never seem to find the right clean models .. one week I'm all about the JC120 tones and the next I want the twin reverb tones. I like variety, and when I listen to a scratch track or am crafting a song, I listen, listen, and listen over and over, slowly formulating the 'tone' I want in my head first, and then I go thru a long and frustrating system of finding the exact tone. In short- do what the song calls for. Same application towards effects.

I do like reverb, a lot. The biggest problem I see is that most who use it can't seem to control it in the mix- always too much. The queensryche album 'operation mindcrime' is a perfect example of reverb overuse to the point of being criminal. Such a fantastically written and performed masterpiece, almost unlistenable because of a studio producer wanted more cowbell (reverb lol).. Especially on the vocal tracks. I've been dying for someone to re-master it and apply better suited reverb levels.
