I thought some of you might get a kick out of this.

My son calls me last night from College. He said I won an award, which is not uncommon for him, hes won a lot of awards. I said what was the award for? He says its the Inter Faith Award.

Now my son isnt religious at all in fact he is anti religious.

I said how did you win an interfaith award, when you basically dont profess to any faith.

He said I represented the Aethiest group on campus.

Now Im proud of my son for winning awards, but Im a bit on the fence on this one, he wants to be a lawyer, possibly go into politics, so I really dont think its a label he wants attached to him.

Lets step back to his seniour year in HS, he went to a Religious Based Christian Private School, from start to finish. Anyway his last year they wanted to have a debate on the Existence of God. My son was nominated to represent the side that there is no God. The kid he was to debate, well his father was a huge booster at the school and his mother the middle school science teacher. A couple of days before the debate, the president of the school pulled the plug on the debate. My son didnt like it cause he was ready and prepared. Last year I was at the school for a function with my daughter and wound up sitting with the president. He said you know I really wanted your son to debate the other kid, but we talked to them independently ahead of the debate and realized that your son was gonna wax the floor with the other kid. Plus being a Christian based school, we didnt think it was in the best interest of the school to have a student like your son tear awart the foundation of what we believe as a school, so I pulled the plug on it.

Anyway, sorry George I know my son goes way counter to what you believe, and it really puts me on the spot, but I always taught my kids to think for themselves look for answers to thier questions.

In the end I may have raised a monster.

Now the flip side is my son is an A student, next year he is going to Germany in a student exchange program to study a year there, my daughter is an A student, she doesnt hold, or at least she doesnt get vocal about anti religious beliefs.

With all the debates on religion we get into at times on here, I just thought I would share this.

My parents are fairly religious, so here I am, at some point one of them will find out and ask me what he won this award for, and quite honestly I would rather not cross that bridge, but it is what it is.

Congratulations to your son, John. The fact that he learned to think for himself and not put down other's beliefs shows you have raised him correctly!

On the Interfaith Awards (from http://www.sfcg.org/sfcg/2012awards/interfaith.html):
These three faith leaders have dedicated themselves to promoting awareness of and respect for religious diversity worldwide. They have not shied away from openly discussing and engaging with difficult and controversial issues and have given themselves in service to dialogue and illuminating the issues and challenges we face in developing respect and understanding among diverse religions.

Mike I hope you are right about my son, the problem is, he has this huge IQ and huge Ego to boost, so sometimes I just think he likes to use it to tear others apart.

Hes like an encyclopedia when it comes to facts and can just take off on an argument or debate and really crush others, I dont care for that, I always thought you state your case and then leave it, but he really goes in for the kill.

I guess if he becomes a lawyer he has the right mentality.

Thanks man, just a concerned dad here.

I'm a concerned father too.

I pray . . .

Many, including myself turn from our Fathers house.
Some return, others don't.

I don't see where you owe me any apology.
I know the score full well.

That's why I pray.

Interesting...very interesting...

I got a call from my son (lives in CA now). (He was feeling a bit down over some issues with his career plans...) For years he was staunch, anti-religion.... Now, he's not so staunch... I have always professed my Christianity to him, and said nothing when he scoffed at it... (It was always very hurtful)...But I did indeed teach him to think for himself. So he calls me up the other night and we chatted for two hours... He's beginning to re evaluate his stance... on everything. One of the keys here was that I tried to inform him AND i tried to set good examples. I believe now, its paying off.. The coolest part of it is that he's adapting his perceptions, by his own volition... I merely informed him and I walk the walk (most of the time) .

JW,It seems as tho your son recognized one very important thing.Everyone has got a given freedom in this country and he sure did defend that right.
I think he would make an excellent lawyer and I sure would like to have him on my side to defend my cause. As a politician he sounds like he has some integrity.I know your proud and you should be.For what it's worth.
