Chiggers are nasty. You can get bitten when on an infected lawn, too.

Chiggers live mainly in tall grass, especially near water. They can jump like fleas except they are nearly microscopic. You don't see them or feel them. Days after they are gone you start itchiing. Then of course you spread their enzyme and the area of itching gets bigger and bigger. If you run into a colony you can get "bit" by hundreds of them, usually around the ankles. I know several people who are highly allergic to ivy, sumac, oak and MUCH prefer the plant rashes! I mean chiggers are the worst itch on planet Earth.
Glen (I'm not a liberal by the way and I studied Russian history in college), I imagine what you are talking about is sand fleas. I got a few of those when I went to the Jersey shore.

Okay...Can somebody please explain all this racism going on here?... When you talk about Chegroes in the lawn, maybe a little respect here would go a long way toward avoiding those 'bites' you all complain about... Honestly, that 'ch' word is just so 'base'.

Been bit by just about every nasty bug out there: mosquitos, gnats, horseflies, deerflies, ticks, fisher spiders, recluse spiders, chiggers, fleas, etc. I've fished in deep woods, in fileds next to ponds, etc. Bugs love water. Insect repellent is a must for me. I find recluse spiders in my house all the time, little bastards. I got the worst reaction from chiggers. They're the most diabolical of all God's creatures. Can't see them. Can't feel them bite, technically they don't bite but put a tiny drop of enzyme on your skin and suck it up, then fall into the grass and molt into a harmless mite. It's the enzyme that we're allergic to and is the itchiest thing known to humans. And they live in colonies so you usually get "bit" dozens of times. Just safer to douse yourself from the knees down with repellent.

Not so funny story..

I went hiking last summer for charity- hiked 8 miles up a steep mountain trial, I knew there would be bugs, but what shocked me is the GNATS were especially horrendus. I had two different brands of bug spray (one aresol, the other a pump spritzer), both of which had almost ZERO effect on the gnats. They would scatter when I spray it on at first, then just come right back within 10 seconds and land in it, play, swim, lounge by the pools of my sweat... They just laughed at me and buzzed my head like it was an aphrodisiac.. It was a living hell. I think I did more damage to myself by continuing to spray my face with it over and over.. I will probably grow a 3rd nut by the end of spring this year for it...

I believe some bugs are becoming immune to repellent. Like when DDT was banned there were several species of locusts that probably thought it was like salad dressing. Bugs, bacteria, viruses kind of outnumber us humans and if one has a mutation that makes it resistant, it passes on its immunity to the offspring. Kind of like what's happening in hospitals with staff, cdiff, etc.

I'm kinda late here apparrently... but I laugh at complaining about 82!

I live in Wisconsin... which is basically the same as Minn. People do not shovel here. Your taxes will be ridiculously high and still your streets will not get plowed.
The fishing is awesome... when it's not overrun by asshole businessmen bringing their yuppie families up from Chicago to infiltrate all of our lakes.
Wisconsin/Minnesota is home to people who talk funny, clouds, taxes, depression, serial killers, bitterly cold LONG winters, tropic-like damp and humid summers. I've been to Vegas and Phoenix in July. Milwaukee's 90-95 degree Summer day is MUCH nastier. The webs of your fingers will stick together. Every part of you is sticky 30 minutes after a shower. There is no Spring. There is no Fall. Summer. Winter.
Oh, and I hope you like your Department of Transportation spending $1,000,000,000 (Billion with a B) on a massive freeway Interchange that two years later needs to be rebuilt and expanded because the assholes didn't have the foresight to see that three lanes in the middle of a metro area of 2,000,000 people isn't going to cut it.
There's a reason why we produce more psychopaths than any other state.
