Wow, Peg you are one hot tamale and your not bad looking either.
I think I have new found respect for you. WOOOOOOT lol Holla baby!@!

And Jimmy, you are on fire to-night as well. Too bad that doesn't come in a pill, I'd order a bottle.

JCP I told you that you couldn't tell the difference between the cat's tail and the tiger tail, now you're getting the claws. This bunch isn't playing for peanuts...best make peace before you RAGE QUIT or worse.

They'll drive you over the balcony to the street below.
Still feeling clever? I'm betting that feeling is wearing thin not unlike their patience in general.

The moral of the story is "try not to get any on you". lol

Aww JCP don't attempt to hand it to me now..that just appears like an attempt to evade the topic at hand.

I think you got caught with your hand in the cookie jar, chuckles.

"if you wanna play, you gotta pay" and you are paying, straight up.

JCP you're covering up and that's ok, just don't think you are calling me out to divert. I'll throw your ass to the wolves because people have to stand on their own 2 legs or whatever else it is they prop their llama ass up with these days.

You made the mess, you deal with the mess.

If you don't care, I don't think they will either.
But I think you do care and that's part of the problem right there.

that's not at all what i come away with, grant. pat metheny (the author) made it perfectly clear he's a huge fan of louis armstrong so i doubt he considers any of armstrong's work as moldering in some grave. quite the contrary and that's what got him so bent out of shape.

afterall he wrote: his (kenny g's) incredible arrogance to even consider such a thing, and as a musician, for presuming to share the stage with the single most important figure in our music.

and then later....

there ARE some things that are sacred - and amongst any musician that has ever attempted to address jazz at even the most basic of levels, louis armstrong and his music is hallowed ground.

pretty clear to me how he views armstong's contributions.

PM gave three examples of "musical necrophilia". louis armstrong, nat king cole, and wes montgomery. no doubt three of his heroes. do you seriously think he's implying that their "music" is dead? again...not at all what i come away with.

more likely he's referring to three examples of someone glomming on to the work of great artists who are no longer around to fend off such tresspass. at least that's what i come away with.

yet another way to interpret his 'necrophilia" analogy is pretty simple....necrophilia isn't messing with the dead's possesions or their artistic contributions....it's simply f**k over a dead person who doesn't have any defense against the tresspass.

Mark, I stand corrected.. You make a very valid point about the 'necro' statement. I hadn't looked at it that way (Was thinking about the song, not the person) . The whole use of the term just threw me off.

I do get that Mehany has intense passion about the artists. I have my own version or passion over certain artists.

I think it was Picasso, who once stated: "The purpose of life is to find your gift, and the meaning of life is to give it away" ... My whole point is that Mehaney's argument sounds a bit like a religion... (Instead of Christ, it was the profit Satchmo, who's temple has been defiled...unless of course , folks are willing to pay full price for his CDs) :)

right on, grant. that's a great quote....WHOEVER said it!

and here something for you...you should check these two pat metheny tunes out. i know you're not a big jazzbo but i also know you can appreciate things outside of the stuff you usually listen to.

this next one is kinda interesting. metheny usually plays A LOT of notes when soloing. but his solo on this at around 2:33...he actually takes his time and plays a little more sparingly than usual. i think the beginning of his solo...those first few notes are as close as it gets to a perfect entrance...

Okay you got me again, That first one is a beautiful piece... Absoluetly love it.
The second one... Its kind of sterile to me... The problem I have with it is that it races through, what might otherwise be very salient movements in the piece. I undersatnd all to well the value of momentum... but we cant stop a train on a dime...can we? Its for fast movers... I think...

That blog was from 13 years ago. Both of them have successfully made a lot of money since then while people here are backbiting how they did it.

I suspect peg posted that because her and mdh were discussing kenny g's merits (and lack thereof) in another thread.

or maybe she put it up to generate discussion on something besides the bible or the constitution (BOTH of those items being much older than 13 yrs old...yet you and others never tire of discussing those)

Those who love Louis Armstrong don't have to buy Kenny G. Those who love Kenny G don't have to buy Pat Metheny.

What is the big deal?

i'll ask you the same. what's the big deal? if you find the thread irrelevant or of no interest no one is forcing you to participate.

it makes just as much sense to me to discuss the PM/KG thing as it does endlessly discussing your or my political and religious views. really ....i could just easily ask you "what's the point of that"???? you're not changing anyone's views. neither am i. so why?

Musicians piss all over the sacred every day. It's the schtick that sells their latest pile of feces.

"every day"? not sure i agree....but either way....what's the harm in discussing this? we've batted around far more goofy $hit on this site.

I'm not saying it's wrong to have a discussion about it. I just don't see the point in criticizing someone for making a living, whether I personally like what they play or not.

Kenny G has never appealed to me, but someone is buying it. Good for him. If he plays over someone else's music and gives them credit for it, then that person is receiving royalties they wouldn't otherwise be getting. Yes, Louis Armstrong's estate is profiting from KG's "blasphemy" so, imo, he's doing a good thing even if I (or anyone else) personally hates the results. It's not impossible that this idea came from his label telling him it was going to work.

Peg is a great jazz bassist...with good original music and nice legs! She obviously feels the need to protect the art from the corporate hack. But its not like she wouldn't appreciate someone performing her music and putting royalties in her mailbox even if it sucked.

I've recently had a couple of songs covered by a major label artist who changed some verses (with my permission) so he could get a piece of the song. It totally ruined the song, imo, but so what? I'm smiling on my way to the bank, and his version forces a comparison in my favor through the ears of those who have heard my original version.

Just like when I mentioned the guitarist in Warsaw who fills open dates on his band's schedule by hosting karaoke on week nights, I have to wonder how many on this list have tried paying the bills as a full-time musician?

Not every day is going to be your best one, but you try to do what you think will pay the rent this month and worry about next month when it gets here.
