I was expecting more from Mumford and Sons. I dunno, they're ok I guess but I heard no melody or counter melodies from the instruments. Just everyone kinda just "stumming" along. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

I like a good vocal as much as anyone but the same three or four chords "strummed" over and over doesn't really hold my interest very long.

And I think that's the problem with much of the stuff that's popular now. It's one thing that there isn't a solo (and that's ok....I get that not every song NEEDS a solo) but please, I've got to hear something going on melodically from the instruments besides boring "play the changes" backup.

I'm glad I'm not the only noticing this same issue with 90% of the *new* music out there.

I can never forget reading Hammer of The Gods and thinking about the refusal of John Paul Jones to sign in blood the contract with Satan that would bring riches and fame and everything else considered a "successful" music career..

Haven't read that book, but I find that interesting since JPJ is the one member of Zep who is most clearly "signed to satan".

Have you ever seen Diamanda Galas, whom he collaborated with? I don't think I've ever seen a more demonic act in my life. She has multiple voices coming out of her when she sings.

Yes, and really every award ceremony suffers this. There are a few people competing against each other and their supporters and/or fans are the only ones allowed to vote.

It's the same whether we're talking Grammy's or the local PTA.

But the grammies are more fun to laugh at.

Clearly she's using an arsenal of effects to get her voice to do that, along with some creative octave changes.. even our mixer can do that- we sometimes dial it to "satan voice" and have fun with it.. I'm shocked anyone took her seriously to be honest

So what I don't get here is the consistent badgering of the awards and the newer music-

C'mon guys, dontcha think you are showing your age a bit ? Who cares about the grammy's or any other awards ceremonies? Jethro tull won metal album of the year- I think we all figured out it was a joke.

But today's music is so much better than anything since the 80's in my opinion. There's a LOT of really great bands out there, finally doing craftier melodies and arrangements than we've seen in almost two decades. While much of it IS still pop, at least it's not the cookie-cutter crap we've been subjected to in years past, like AVRIL, MILEY, BRITTANY, and the worst ROCK in history from groups like NICKELBACK, CREED, LINKIN PARK, OFFSPRING, and so many more...

Yeah, there's always going to be crap bands and corporate moneymakers, but there is a circle of life in music, and I strongly believe we're on the upswing.. I'm lovin today's music.. I can't believe most of you can't let go of classic rock and move on...

What I see is the trendy coffee shop acoustic guitar crooners of the past 5 to 10 years emerging as the new 'Rock' bands.

Its very difficult to compose something that pleases the majority. Aside from that, in my most creative hours, i have discovered that the extent of my love, sadness or excitement...can usually be captured in 3 or 4 chord progressions... (sigh)... (Start that one in Dm)
