i'm thinking about playing w musicians out of your age group. and maybe that's fodder for it's own thread....

when i was in my teens, twenties, and beyond i'd play w anyone that could play, had something to offer, and wasn't a tool.

yeah, i totally get a bunch of 19 yr olds not wanting to play w someone in their 50's....but still the off hand dismal of anyone deemed as "too old" bothers me on some level. just the same now as when i was younger.

i have a cpl of ads on c-list and they both include this at the end:

Relevant: that you can play and you're not a jerk

Irrelevant: your age... as long as you're old enough to drive to the gig and you're not too old to carry your own equipment. (-:

i've also said...

if your main focus and first question is "how old are you" we're likely coming at things very differently

i actually saw an ad not long ago that said "BAND LOOKING FOR GTRST BETWEEN 19 and 23". and that's it! nothing about the kind of music they played, instrumentation, etc....nada. zip. zilch. cos' let's face it, if i a qualified gtrst who was 24 or 25 came along, how could THAT ever possibly work?????

Mark, Some times age does make a difference... I will gladly work a project with 70 years olds, any day over that of 19 year olds...... Simply because the liklihood of completing a project is greater with the 70 year olds... I also think at my age, I have less tolerance for apprenticeship, where the youngster has 'attitude' or is clueless about his place in the food chain.
It was a crappy call on that one dude to act so indifferent to Scotty...But the flip side of it is that there is a good reason why that old bugger has to audition the John Q Public... Its not like 'his people...will call my people' LOL

Capt thanks for the props on my looks! Are you hitting on me? LOL!

For me its all about the spirit or soul of the person, if they are passionate about what they do, whether they are good, bad, experienced, or inexperienced doesnt matter. Ive learned some pretty good stuff from people that were way below my playing level.

As someone else said, finding a musical medium so you can converse musically is important along with being open minded. And some of the best ideas I have gotten recently writting wise have come from me forgetting a lot of what I know how to do, and just letting it go.

Thanks JW, that's what I get for being honest.

Ok mental note to self, no more positives, only negatives.

I mean, that is what you people like here at Bmix, blood letting and brain surgery, right?

I meant that you look like you are in one piece, minus that cheese ass wig, John but thanks for that. (you dick!!!)

Just another day in the barrel..tomorrow could be yours.

I played a show last Friday night with a band in their 20's called the Perishables (https://www.facebook.com/The.Perishables). . all in their 20's, but they had a 60? yr old trumpet player - it was really cool to see music come first - he was really good too - and they were saying he's been on a few albums for well-known bands.

check out their Rooster's set of videos.

Cheers!

edit: er, my band played just before this band went up... I didn't play in their band.

There was a band in Memphis called Neighborhood Texture Jam, they had people in it from 20-80.

I dont know if they still play or not, havent heard or seen the name lately, but i used to check them out and they were awesome.

before the internet..

Yeah, as a teen, the small group of actual guitar players who were serious and good kept it to themselves, never wanted to help someone else become better. It was very competitive back then. Parents wouldn't buy me lessons (that's what school band is for, and guitar isn't a real instrument ! LOL).

I remember a few old farts that would be at the music stores from time to time, and these guys could play! They didn't mind showing you things, so I picked up what I could from them.

I agree, today's kids have it SO easy.. hell *I* have it easy too, if I'm learning a song and can't tell what I'm hearing, I just look it up :)

I have to say though, having learned my first 25 years by ear, I can damn well listen to most songs and play them without even trying- Can jump up with a band and play songs I've never played before just by following and knowing what notes will most likely come next. Today's rugrats can't touch that :P
