I can understand wanting something tangible online to check out; videos, MP3's, etc.
But, what if all they've got is old stuff? Nothing recent.
What if the material isn't exactly the kind of thing they're doing NOW?

Old stuff is fine - at least it gives you an idea of their ability level. I had one guy send me an MP3 of him 'with a band' - this was in response to me acoustic duo ad. The 'band' sounded ok, but I really couldn't tell what HIS ability was, but I gave him a chance. He could barely sing (mumbler), couldn't harmonize, and made excuses about his acoustic guitar 'being used by his daughter' both times I gave him a shot.'

There's no guarantee that the tracks you hear are indicative of the person's actual skill, but at least its something.

Like I've said before, if the person does not have the ability to record hisself or show videos, then he's probably not up to the level I'm looking for.

I generally just record freestyle jamming and try to find something useful among the tapes later.
It is impossible to write good material without wading through a LOT of sh*t.
We never do any covers.
We both got burned out doing the cover band thing long ago.

Our last stable lineup fell apart because no one would contribute anything to the songwriting process.
We just jammed a lot.
Eventually, they wanted ME to write ALL the songs.
They got impatient when I couldn't deliver fast enough.

I guess a big problem for me is finding something I'm satisfied enough to present to people.
I have difficulty writing without someone to bounce ideas off of and develop a foundation with.
My girlfriend & I have such different clashing musical tastes, it is hard to find common ground to work together.
So, we each just go work on our own.
I pick the stuff that stays or goes back on the shelf.
We both have LOTS of stuff saved for solo projects.

Some songs I like are very complex, abstract, noisy, and chaotic sounding.
Kind of cut-and-paste style compositions.
But, then I also like extremely simple songs with a nice groove too.
These are often simple loops or traditional pop style formulas.

If we have a "sound" it would probably have more to do with what tools we are using and who we are performing with, I think, than how we play without them.
Our current setup is a little weird.

I know age really doesn't matter but I would like musicians close to my age. This is about the fourth or fifth time I'm having to find NEW musicians, the old ones(whom I won't mention any names) just weren't committed enough, and they always canceled on me the day of our band practice. It's like they we're too busy to be part of a band. So my question is how do you find committed musicians? I've tried contacting members on here, and on Craigslist but most of them haven't responded back yet. I'm getting pretty irritated already, my band is rock. I think most people enjoy rock music, so this shouldn't be too hard. Has anyone else had a problem like this before?

Welcome to my world, my friend! Very difficult finding committed QUALITY musicians in a slightly younger age-range. I am currently searching for a ["highly proficient", shall we say] guitarist and drummer to replace ones that, while very talented, most likely shared a lot of traits of your own previous members

Best of luck...

Never heard back from the guy who cancelled out last week at the last moment.
Had another response to my CL ad, guy said 'google him' and I find he's got a home appraisal business, amongst other thngs, but no online music. I ask him if he has any youtubes, or MP3s he can send and state the reasons why I am asking for them, and he says he doesn't have any, but that he's played with ...., done this song and that ...
I didn't bother replying again.

Thanks Tom! Much appreciated. As soon as we can get the right musicians, we'll be Not Letting It Die again ASAP on a stage near you!
