Some of the nicest people I know are "rednecks" and to me it means you aren't afraid of getting your hands dirty or helping someone you barely know cause that's what they do down there.

(There sure aren't any rednecks in NJ and especially of the benevolent variety, just a steaming pile of corporate driven assholes.)

I don't really understand how exactly making fun of rednecks is racist.. It's a class stereotype, not racism. Southerners come from all different racial backgrounds.. unless anyone is suggesting that all southerners are now a race? That would be an interesting discussion...

But anyways, this popularity of making fun of southerners came from maury, jerry springer, etc.. who would have the most idiotic, illiterate, and pathetic guests .. you just let them start talking and america laughs at them. This was what led to the term "trailer trash" becoming so popular.

And what did almost all of these idiots have in common? A southern drawl.

I grew up in the south, I won't hesitate to say that many southerners are decent and intelligent people. The problem is that the slower accent combined with morons (both north and south have plenty of morons).. well that accent only gives an impression of someone being even dumber and slower than they really are.

The sad part is that the rest of the world sees us through their TV's. Shows like springer, and the whole glut of reality-tv shows gives the rest of the world the impression that we are a nation of idiots. Look at GWB and he was like our idiot prez. There's at least enough shows on TV to portray some people with intelligence, but the majority of shows are unfortunately idiots who mouth off and create drama.

I too see "idiocracy" unfolding before my eyes, and feel helpless to stop it. You can't even convince people to vote for their own self-interests anymore. They vote based on simple concepts, drawn in crayon, and lack any real understanding of politics and social issues.

I'll never forget the way GWB says Nukaler weapons! That sh!t just cracks me up and I am a TEXAN!

I laugh at rednecks and I AM ONE! It doesn't hurt my feelings one damn bit! In fact my favorite stores are; any music store, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, Hell any lumber yard or tool store, Carters country, and any gun show, I like NASCAR, any kind of beer, corn dogs, Pizza! Does that qualify me as a REDNECK! My long hair just caint cover up my REDNECK! REDNECK, REDNECK!!!!

I think there may be some distinctions between rednecks, hillbillies, good ol' boys, Southerners, and general trailer trash.
But, I've only heard redneck used in the pejorative.

A lot of my family are hillbillies from Kentucky & Tennesee.
But, I think only a few would qualify as rednecks.

My girlfriend is from North Carolina and she refers to herself as a Southerner.

Well, I think the stereotype is a white lower-class male who'd make a good guest on the Jerry Springer Show.
So, it's not exclusively about class since the stereotype is caucasian.

I got called a redneck once by a black guy in Detroit, which is totally laughable.
Other than being white, I cannot think of how I'd fit that stereotype.

Redneck is no more a perjorative when used by Southerners to poke fun at ourselves than nigger is when Chris Rock makes fun of black people.

For you etimiolgoists (sp?) out there - the root for that is 'roonek' IIRC from the Afrikaans perjorative pointed at Brit occupiers with the bright red necks from that African sun.

I used to know how to spell but computers fixed that...
