Kramer thinking on what you said about a construction site, its weird, the last couple of years in the fall I have worked at a cotton gin. To most it would seem like the noiseist place on the planet, but when I sit back and listen I hear a sort of rythym and melody in it.

Whats to get negative about... They are doing on stage what many Monks do in meditation for thousands of years... They simply captured and focused on a sound phenonmon, associated with a visual/mechanical display of the operating world. Nothing about it is negative...They do this without crapping on the audiences.

I just don't see the artistic merit in it. I found the audio to be crass and off-putting. But it's more than that, it's like standing next to a busy construction site.. it's just noisy and there's nothing artistic about it. I can watch the guy hammering and at the same time I can imagine bizarre imagery that is 1 and 2 degrees of separation from the construction itself.. that doesn't make it art- that makes it everyday noise, with added interpreted visual noise. To me, that's not really art.

I don't understand your reference to monks. I do get chanting and other activities, and I would call it a stretch to liken this to that.

I struggle with the correct words to truly describe my dislike, so I guess I will just have to leave it with what I already typed, although I really don't think that hit the target in explaining why I don't like it.

Kramer, The Tibetin Monks have mastered the suspension of certain states of physics within their senses... Its a dicipline (Might wish to check out Zen) of meditation... Couple that with the desire to capture an essence of something (i.e sound/Physics of construction or tools or technology) and you get a demonstration of that in a form of what we call 'art' Not everything is Free-Bird, bro ...

Listening to our environment is an ancient way of finding musical & artistic inspiration.
But, man, having isolated himself a bit from nature with industry & technology, creates new environments to draw from.

PaperDog gets the sorta zen aspect of it.

For FYI:

Program Music (What that means)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program_music
Pastorale (Definition)
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pastorale
Pastoral (Music):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TXvE-mb ... re=related
Minimalism (What that means musically / sound)
http://library.thinkquest.org/27110/nof ... alism.html
MInimalist (Music) _ A must listen through the whole piece to get this. Then reflect back on what the haters are doing

Finally, Zen and Minimalism:
Zen says that we don’t really experience existence, because we are too busy experiencing our own subjective, version of
existence.

http://goto.bilkent.edu.tr/gunes/ZEN/zenphilosophy.htm
One way to overcome subjective is to view and hear objective, hence the Haters facilitate that through demonstration. (Whether they realize it, intended it or not) . Like I said, So much more than Free bird :)

I can get the listening of nature and hearing the intrinsic rhythm inside of it. I even get the rhythm of a cotton gin.. I too can lay claim to hearing the rhythm of a car tire that's got a lump of mud in it and thumping away, or even when my car is in low gear and the engine is warbling with a certain rhythm, or any other machinery... I can even go as far as to say that I could get a beat or rhythm stuck in my head and that in itself could be the inspiration for a song.

All that said, re-creating the noise, and in the case of the haters- nothing but noise with the simple rhythm of the staple gun or whatever that was.. well at that point, it's neither art nor inspiring as much as it's an imitation replica.

And I personally think freebird is a poorly written song, so don't assume that's my personal zen ... heh.

I do blame the dj's and the payola.

It was decent enough the first 10K times I heard it, afterwards I just wanted to cut my ear off and send it to someone. LOL
