I don't know. I'd rather listen to music pre-1980 when it breathed like real humans do. I truly dislike metronomic timing in music. It sounds forced to me. Maybe some genres require it, but nothing I listen to, with any sense of appreciation and enjoyment.

Real interesting about horn players. Perhaps that is why horn bands sound so tight all the time?

Actually, I remember Chicago weaving in and out a bit, too, live.

I'm with you there. It's a bitch to record, too -- I've been using canned drums on my recordings out of necessity, but it always feels so stiff and mechanical, I can't stand it. There's just no groove or energy there.

I guess a good rhythm section is like a good pair of underwear. It doesn't have to be flashy or stylish, since most people won't be looking too closely anyway, but it does have to be tight while still leaving room to breathe.
