I have decided to do some recording and have been working on tunes in my home studio. I just about have one of them complete and am very happy and excited with the way it is turning out (instrumental)! I have one track left to lay down it is an acoustic track. I have been reading in another thread about micing techniques for acoustic guitars. I don't have the proper condenser mics. for this. I do however have an SM Beta 87A condenser mic. I also have SM 58 Beta, SM 58, and 2 SM 57's I was planning on just plugging the acoustic into the hard disk recorder and using the COSM settings. This is what I did with another original I recorded "Consuelo" Thoughts? Tomorrow I plan to change the strings on the acoustic and get that last track recorded, then mix down and hopefully post it on my player before this weekend!

what format are you recording to, jeff? if you have tracks to spare....go w both DI AND one or two of those Beta's ..then you have some choices re. blend or going one way or the other.

those beta's do a fine job for recording acoustic instruments.

Thanks Mark, I am using a Boss BR1180 hard disk recorder. I bought it back in 04 before I learned how to work computers. It really is a great little song writers recorder. Should I use that X/Y pattern you were talking about in mikes thread. Yes I have 4 tracks left.

yeah, those are real cool machines. i came close to grabbing one recently but had to replace my old P.O.S. Carvin mixer w an Allen & Heath ZED22FX board.

yeah, i'd definitely go w the old tried and true X/Y pattern. one of 'em aimed
at the brdg the other around the 12th fret. and remember your gtr's proximity to the mics will affect the tone as well as the level.

it is a little more work than going DI and you've gotta keep Fido quiet but it can be fun experimenting w different mics and placement. plus it just flat out SOUNDS better.

looking fwd to hearing what you come up with.

Cool!

Get my addy from my page and send one to me. :) Unless stuff is posted on SoundClick I can't listen to much. They're the only ones still geared for a super slow line modem. I suppose that will change soon. But I can get them email. Maybe we can swap a couple. :)

Oh Oh. Dino is tiring so the power is dropping on this machine.

Go with the X-Y technique with 2 of the mics, or try 1 mic in one track and the DI in a 2nd track - or record twice, once each way.

Good luck Jeff! The best thing about adding an acoustic track is you not only get melody and rhythm, you also get the percussive sound of the pick on strings.

Always used the X-Y method to record acoustic in the studio. Check out "From The Beginning" at www.bandmix.com/juleslochland

Thanks Jimmy! I checked out "From The Beginning" that is a great acoustic sound! That guy has some pitch problems vocally. I know you are talking guitar and mic. technique.

A working musician's XY condenser mic setup for acoustic guitar? Zoom H1
It's $100 and works well as a live recorder also. For recording acoustic tracks to a DAW, just use the mini stereo out. It won't replace $2000 condenser mics into high-end tube preamps and a $20k console but it sounds pretty damn good. A demo comparison:

No worries Jeff, no one could be harder on me but me. Precisely why I love being a side man and having a lead vocalist.
