I chose to write 'a' root, instead of 'the' root.
Root of chord or scale vs. Key is important, but I envisioned interval training, in which case 'a' root note of a chord, or the key of the piece, should be the same.
Interval ear training.
If you get wacky enough you can train with inversions, in which case we're back to talking about the Key... but that's a mean thing to do to a kid.
