That flatted 5th is also called Diabolus en Musica (Latin)
It is a Tritone (tritonus), otherwise known as either an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th.

In medieval times, the Tritone, after being rejected by the Church as the interval of the Holy Trinity due to its extremely dissonant sound, became the interval of the Devil himself, and it was banned and cursed by the Church. They even went so far as to suggest that it invoked the Devil to prevent its use, and a great deal of diabolical superstition became associated with this devilish interval.

After equal temperament came into more common use, the Tritone started rearing its beautiful head of horns and became much less dissonant thanks to the 'everything is slightly out of tune' nature of the new temperament.

Oooh sooo thaaaat's it! The doctor gave me a prescription for some of these new meds he said would help 'equalize my temperament' ... but now everything seems slightly out of tune .... :D

A tritone consists of 3 whole tones, eg
F-G, G-A, A-B, usually found in a Augmented 4th.
Tho it was considered of the Devil

Haley I just had a funny thought, why dont all of us on here put each other on ignore and post about 5 times on the same post and see if it makes any sense, it would probably make more sense than some of these post!

What do you think?

You know rock n roll is about
parallel 5ths, something else they
didn't like back then either.

I'm not much for tritones, hard to make work,
but I love some paralel 5ths.

I like the tritone - hit a F after playing a B and it's kind of an ominous sound. To me, it has a similar to affect to playing in a harmonic minor scale.

It's funny - I find myself using the pentatonic scales less and less. Net result though, is that they work much better when not overused.

I've experiented with playing progressions where I change the scale type or mode for each element, say 1, 4, 5. Play 1 as a minor pentatonic, play 4 as a harmonic minor, 5 as a melodic minor. It takes a bluesy progression and sends it off into Pink Floyd territory.

Doesn't always work, rarely works really well, but has made me think outside my self imposed box.

You've got it Talbot, its easier said than done,
but the results are worth the practice.

I watched a video of a band I was in, and the
lead guita player(my brother-in-law), played the
1st mode of th blues scale in whatever chord
we were playing in ie... We start in A, he's playing
1st mode A blues scale, song changes to D and he
swthches to 1st mode D blues scale. I never noticed him
doing this while we were playing, but he sure gets a
good sound that way, and is actually playing less.
You've got to find your own style and work on it and
make it you.

The tritone naturally appears in the major scale.

In G Major (4C - 7F#) when played from the Lydian mode this tritone becomes haunting and beautiful (C B E F#) CMaj7#11

Steve Vai uses this approach here and there, where he will substitute the key of the progression to the 4th mode (Lydian)

ex. while playing a G chord you think in D major which turns the G into the Lydian but the tritone shifts adding a C# to the mix.
