Kansas city has been the epicenter of this horrific heatwave. We are heading inexorably to an extreme drought situation. What I'm particularly concerned about it absolutely no insects flying around streetlights at night. No moths. No katydids. No Japanese beetles. NOTHING! I hear a few crickets. I've heard a few cicadas recently during the heat of the day, but NO insects at night around the porch light? Is anybody else experiencing this?

We've had at least 3 or 4 days over 100 degrees already. As for insects we're getting run over this year. Especially by Spiders. And we get Black Widows a little too frequent!

Lots of heat here, too, but cooling at night. Mosquitoes, moths, all the normal bugs!

...Fisherman Bob ... excellent question and observation. But when Kansas City becomes a Port you will at least not have to worry about the heat and in this modern world of technology who needs insects when you can build them ?? It is however in reality very reassuring to me that there are still those among the walking dead ... us, that are still aware of Nature and reality even if we disagree on"manmade" things like polution and religion, government and evil, I always enjoy your Posts. I thank you for them. Ta

. Thanks for the compliment. I do a lot of "posting" on my website Levitynews.com. Another observation is that the sky this summer is much darker blue than normal. I've only seen a sky that blue in the Winter after a big snowstorm. It's like there's nothing to stop the sun's rays. Maybe we're not being told the reality of global climate change. I don't believe man is the cause of it, but we're not helping the situation. Actually 1934 and 1936 were two very much worse years for heat in the USA. I wonder if people back then were talking about global warming.

The earth traverses/orbits in an ellipsis around the sun. . Just within 360 evolutions/degrees around the sun (360 years) its a guarentee that no winter or summer is exactly like the one before it or after it.

Each revolutions, positions the earth a little bit closer/farther from the sun than the prior orbit. Thus, there will be those seasons which are hotter or colder accordingly

To illustrate precisely how this works, dig the old Spirograph out of the attic and do an elliptical pattern . The center of the page would represent the sun. Wherever your pen is on the page, would represent the earth in orbit around the sun. One complete ellipsis form starting point back to starting point equals one year (4 seasons) . Note that Summers and winters are the extreme ends of the ellipsis, where as Spring and fall are on the sides of the ellipsis. Some years, the earth is closer to the sun than it was a year prior, and so on.

Knowing this... I believe that our weather anomolies, come and go accordingly

If I remember correctly there is a slight wobble of the Earth's axis that makes the Sun's rays more direct in Summer. Whether we have a hotter or colder season than normal may be more influenced by the Sun's activity. During this latest global warming anomoly Mars has heated up iin the exact same proportion as the Earth. This leads me to believe that man has little to do with global warming. In 1936 there was a town in North Dakota that recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in that state, something like 121 degrees. The very next February a town nearby recorded the all time low for North Dakota, 60 degrees below zero. So within six months there was a swing of 181 degrees! I wonder if back then people thought it was the End Times.

Want heat n bugs move to Texas ...

Not to worry. Our rains returned this year. So did the bugs.

All part-o the natural cycle.
Arrogant are we to think we can have any lasting effect.

I always thought its the duration of exposure, facing the sun, which dictated the seasons: Note the slash here, which represenst the axis (tilt of the earth) and the Asterisk, which represents the sun

(Summer) / * / (Winter)

Summer: The tilt is toward the sun; ensures longer , more area exposure on a given day.
Winter: The tilt is away from the sun, Shorter, Less area exposure on a given day.

Spring and Fall are variants between

I Should add, The effects are opposite on the other side of the world, which is why Australia is summer during Christmas, while U.S. is Winter during Christmas

agreed fisherman bob the drought has killed off the insects me thinks.. here in Missouri anyhow... ladybugs used to invade our home in autumn time, but last fall very few showed up..

Frikin box elder bugs are out of control around here.
That's the only anomaly I've noticed this summer.

Bob look up El Nina, we are in the cycle right now to where its hotter than normal, as a propane dealer I can tell you the last 18 monthes have been warmer than usual, Im just hoping it will cycle back around, before this winter heating season kicks in.

Weve got all sorts of insects around my house, of course we keep it well watered so my house kinda looks like an oasis. I have around 14 acres of grass, its all parched and drying up at the moment, but it has cooled down a lot the last couple of days and we are getting some relief from some showers.

It is El Nino and La Nina. El Nino is the heating of a 1500 mile by 6000 mile swath of the Pacific Ocean perpendictular with the Baja Penisula. It causes stronger winds that supress the formation of hurricanes in the gulf of Mexico and mid Atlantic Ocean. We are currently experiencing El Nino and forcasters are prediciting we will continue to experience it for the summer.
La Nina is the exact opposite and allows for the formation of hurricanes for the lack of strong west to east upper level winds.

Here Is the cycle of nature folks. We are currently experiencing more insects than usual here in Texas. The reason for it is we had one of the worst droughts in history last year here in Texas. Now all the insects that remained domant during that period are coming back with a VENGANCE! Its like when a forest fire occures it aids in the dispersal of pine cones and seeding of new forest growth. Its nature folks. The eliptical orbit of the earth brings the earth closer to the sun every 26,000 years and guess what happens on December 21st 2012! Only man can think so much of himself that we think we can change the universal pattern! Maybe we have grown to big for our britches! Me thinks a MAJOR B!TCH SLAPPIN IS A COMIN FROM MOTHER NATURE! After all "its not nice to fool MOTHER NATURE"!
