On my Les Pauls I use both pickups and combine them at different times, plus play with the volume and tone controls, you can really get some great combinations that way.

Im assuming you were talking about guitar pickups.

For metal/hardcore like you play, EMG 81 for the bridge and the 85 at the neck is a good combo. If you are a one guitar kinda guy I would use other methods to get the sound you want other than changing out pickups.

Some parts of a song sound better with the bridge pickup. Some sound better with both. Some sound better played on the neck pickup. I use all pickup positions basically for expression, dynamics, and texture.

Some of my guitars have HSH pickup configuration.

Neck PuPs for my round and lush clean tones. Usual tone I use for verses with a light chorus and reverb.

Single PuPs (mid) for tight and janglly type of rhythm stuff for funk.

Bridge PuPs for overdrive and distortion tones. Also, I prefer these PuPs for solos.

My Strat has a Seymour Duncan at the bridge. I almost always use that, varying the sounds by using different amp settings.

I also combine it with the middle pickup when I want just a little less edge.

The other two strat pickups are frankly, great. But I guess if you have three pickups you really like you choose the one with the most gain!

Got stuck on that sound and have no regrets.

(Glen - I have a modeling amp with tons of resets so I use that for playing with sound variations so I 'm not totally shallow)

With my Tele, well it sounds great in that way that only a tele can - particularly when I open it up. But Teles pretty much sound the way they sound; maybe with more or less volume!

For a time utilize only a good tube amp a good guitar the EQ of your amp the tone and volume pots as well as the pick up selector of your guitar.

There is a wealth of useable tone right there ... without a pedal in sight.

Concentrate on the music and how the pitches of
the notes voice out differently, in different octaves,
and different positions. You can always buy the latest
pickups or gadgets, but you'll always have the knowledge
of how music voices out in different keys and how they
are correlated. Learn the major scale than forget it and tear
it into small pieces, all musical answers can be found in the
smallest parts the interval.

I know when I was younger probably 99% of what i played was in the bridge on a LP, it wasn't until i got older and really paid attention to tone that the middle position and neck brought different colors to my ears that i could really appreciate.
I like the neck position for warmer sounds and a fatter tone. Middle and bridge for picked rhythms while the bridge can cut through anything and make your ears bleed.
If you know the tune "Lights" by Journey, that intro just wouldn't be the same in any other position. Nice warm tone. Sounds like the neck to me. Do what pleases your ears and what suits the song. It's all about your personal preference.

I agree with Jsantos the only thing I'll add is I am a HSS guy (strat) I use the neck PuP for the BLUES!
