This topic is sure to run full spectrum.

I have been playing out for a long time and over the years I have worked with many players who wrestled with substance abuse (Amy Winehouse types), lived completely unorganized lives, inability to show up regularly, started fights with other band members, stole money and gear, annoyed everyone else in the band and I am over it. No respect for other members and broken trust. Life is too short to deal with people who don't understand this stuff.

I don't care what someone's politics are. Can they show up on time regularly, come prepared, not annoy or fight with other members and get it done in a live performance in front of people? One of my favorite players has nearly polar opposite politics to my own but we still respect each other and get along great. When the lights go up on stage we know we can depend on each other to make some great music. For me it's really all about mutual respect and trust. You know... all that stuff we were supposed to learn in kindergarten.

If someone regularly disrespects others on a forum I would choose not to work with them regardless of their talent or politics.

I agree with most everything you say here, re working with live ass-holes. The only prob i have with online theory is that we really cant operate efficiently on two-dimensional characterization, which is essentially what forums depict. Nobody knows anybody really...until they meet in person...When that happens the dynamics change drastically.

Case in point, another poster here, "YOD" and I have met up and drank beers for an evening.. We had a great chat.. and turns out he is a highly intelligent, easy going, real down to earth fella... But you cant see or feel or imagine that aspect entirely by looking only at what he posts... especially if you haven't experienced the context meeting the real person. Its two different people... (Though, he's as honest in both domains.)

We all tend to invent the other people we engage a dialog with (until we meet them)

I busted a few balls on the forum... Had mine busted as well... I can guarantee you , I'm nothing at all like what you might read... . and I don't get nearly as excitable as I do on line. I'm a softy at heart... Anybody that wants to kick my ass here... simply cant muster up the desire, once they meet me... LOL!

I think the disparate verbiage in posts can ward off the timid folk, who were looking to find a band-mate on line...

But a smart fella knows better than to make a decision solely on the 2D image... as presented on the forums.

just imho

I'm gonna slam on the brakes for just a second. I was getting into this debate a little bit, but I noticed that Bryan or Nayrb or whatever the hell his name is really wasn't doing much to defend his point. Now that he has (reference his last two posts), I'm not sure why I got involved in it in the first place...Lawrence Welk, Ted Nugent and Bob Dylan? Dude, that's not even a sentence, nevermind an argument! Bob Dylan couldn't get a sandwich...WTF?

You don't like to play covers...AND...?
Bands on food stamps?
People still want to make a demo?

Okay, ya got me. Generally when I PWI, I let people know (for the record, I am not currently).

When you meet old Ted, please be sure to tell him about our forum.

And for those of you who haven't seen it, the guy who said that discussing politics and religion online is "professional suicide" is now posting on the "Rush Limburger..." thread, discussing his views on politics and religion-apparently because he wants to commit professional suicide.

Way to go, genius. Why don't you start another thread about something else in which you are clueless.

Okay, okay (chuckle). I've been a little slow...my bad. Turns out that he's commented on EVERY political post, and left statement such as this little jewel:

This whole debate is about a social issue wrapped in a bible carried by men, who in turn are fond of small boys, and people that have sex in the dark.

I apologize, dude. You were apparently only PWI when you started this thread. Amazing that it makes you sound more intelligent and your statements more cohesive...Have one on me!

I'm just stunned...why did you even start this thread?

The temptation to add my two cents to this stupid thread is overwhelming but I'm concerned that doing so could harm my music career in the future. Oooops, to late I did say stupid.......Dammit!

wins the "Most Inane Post Ever" award.

The whole post was meant to be a suggestion, it honestly had good intentions. Wasn't aimed at any political, religious, or sex ideals.

I'm not looking for players as I said to someone here.

I appear to be a hypocrite yep maybe I am. Clueless nah you don't see my bands music up here sorry. :)

The music on the profile is all I could use due to the Bass players objections I'd give away his licks lol. It's just a bit of a jam from last week with an insufferable guitarist the Bass player invites over who takes half an hour just to plug in his gear. He'll make someone else a great but bothersome Lead guitarist lol I'll post some last night today to spread that misery.

I'm opinionated just like some other people here and as you can see by some of my comments I'm not making alot of friends.
The band I work for would probably not appreciate me putting their name on those comments.

By the way Ted Played The New Daisy here last year he's playing smaller halls all the time, but come on he's 64. The people I know that went in spite of his political views were disappointed, it was more a political rally than a show one said and he's a Republican.

Although Lawrence Welk is a bit dated today members of his band had health insurance among other benefits. No contracts either, course that cuts both ways. Smart businessman.

Bob Dylan was real popular with the anti communist crowd. The sandwich thing is from a book I can't find, not real sure if it was his fellow folk singers who felt he did em wrong or that he was so bad he couldn't get paid. The book was about music business not him in particular.

Peewee Herman regrets losing his show.

How many old guitarists named Bryan are in Memphis? So much for anonymity if you want my last name and address. It wont be the end of the world if it's plastered here on the forum. I'm retired and just got dragged out to play drums with a acoustic band.

I'm the type that researches people I do business with, the net is a closet full of information.
Me I'm here to network, share info, and actually have used this site to gather information on persons that I am working with now.

If you plan on only working with a small certain group of people, by all means flame away, discuss politics, religion, sexual preferences here it's a forum to commit professional suicide.

I thought it had good intentions. I was with ya 100%...despite the fact that it also sounded like criticism towards those members who post their thoughts about the above mentioned subject. Turns out, it had no point whatsoever. You were just flapping your lips. After reading some of your other posts, I realized how much of a tool you really are. I am dumfounded as to how you could bring yourself to begin a discussion such as this...you are the last person on here that should EVER be preaching about this stuff. Maybe you could get Charles Manson to start a thread on being a well adjusted member of society. That's about par for the course.

And BTW, you've dropped that hint about your WORKING band a couple of times...who cares? You seem to think it makes you somebody.

How many old guitarists named Bryan are in Memphis? I guess since I blew your anonymity, you're the only one. Again, you seem to think you're someone, but I don't know you from Adam. Or Bryan Adams. Or Adam Lambert. WHEN your posts make sense, they have an air of "I'm in the Biz, you know." Get over yourself. I'm not buying it.

No matter what field you are in, it is the extremists who are leading. The lukewarm get run over.

And rock & roll has always personified "extreme". The newest/latest/greatest has always been the most extreme from Little Richard all the way to Lady Gaga.

Extreme people hold extreme views. This is why they are leaders. Yes, people who don't like their extreme views might not buy the records (I'll never pay a cent for Springsteen's cow-bellowing) but so what?

I like to point out that there are 300 million people just in the USA. If 1 out of every 600 buys your record, you're Gold.

So being an opinionated jerk only harms you with people who have to put up with that crap. The rest of them think it's funny. They will buy your music if it speaks to them. Period.

So what do you get for being a pu**y or milktoast?

NOTHING.

You want to lay down on the railroad tracks and cry till the train rolls over you, I say fine.

Too many weak willed people already..you're just doing us a favor.

If you want to be timid and afraid, the LAST place you want to be is onstage.
And people will say the meanest sh*t you ever heard, toughen up now.
It just gets worse after they see you around a little, then you get remarks like my favorite, "you'll have a great career in FOLK music".

I almost lost it when I heard that one in person. sh*t, whip me, beat me, feed me Mary Jane's but do not tell me that you think my music is FOLK.
(I felt like saying, "just cut out my heart, it'll be quicker".)

To be honest the first and only time I ever heard the word "milktoast" is via the era of HELMET in the gutters of Pittsburgh, PA. (Yeah I like that music as well, still.)

That was the only show I ever was suspended off the ground in a wave-like ripple of people and moved from the very front to the very rear.

And I like the front. The boards and I are similar. I want to see the show from point blank range.

When I got that ride, I decided not to go back to the front.
Too damn violent in that writhing mass of people.

On the convex, I thought ULTRASPANK had a lame ass pit.
I saw them another time at the Birch Hill and it was significantly more rowdy.

"Milktoast" is a tune off of BETTY.. But then you never heard of HELMET, did you ?

lol
