I personally belong to BMI, and I think it's certainly better to be safe than sorry. As far as being an impediment, I really can't think of a way that could be true.

When we recorded an album in 1996 one of our band mates did a lot of research and we all agreed BMI was better suited for new artist. I don't remember why!

If your a prolific writer and your music is going to get passed around. PD I think your stuff is exceptional. Surprised your not being approached by people from a company. If they do get legal advice. I have a friend that regrets being a in house writer BMI's free for writers and composers, ASCAP $35 writer another $35 producer. Frankly you should just consult an attorney anyhow cause your stuffs really nice.

Ayr What can I say...I truly appreciate your kind words about my stuff... I haven't been approached (yet) by anybody... But I have been asked to return to the Blues Open Mic Jams. This is particularly special to me, because these guys are the real deal... They live , eat breath blues and R & B...and they unanimously asked me back (I got more material to try out) . I'm still in shock...
I think I prolly will join both orgs (ASCAP and BMI) 8)

I've been telling ya the same thing since I came here. The first step is having good songs on a product that can be sold though. You won't get into Walmart until you've shown a LOT of sales already.

I can't see any difference between BMI and ASCAP yet. There isn't a need for either until your songs are being broadcast or performed by others. I'm on BMI and they send me checks for European performance/radio, but because my publishing is owned by my former label, I have no idea about how they pay royalties in the USA. One of my co-writers is with ASCAP and he also gets screwed by the record company (who owns the publishing).

BMI pays based on reporting information submitted by broadcasting companies, whereas ASCAP will send agents to an area who check into a hotel room and actually monitor radio/tv/live venues

some may wonder if their music is rocknroll

here's the test: If you can sing the theme to the old Batman TV show to it.

You have rocknroll
