And currently Andy Timmons. No one plays with as much versatility and passion, imo. He can shred, then play classical acoustic, then jam on jazz with the best of 'em.

Danny Gatton never got much recognition. I dont know if there are any you-tube videos of this guy but I saw him a couple of times and he was great. I think he killed himself 5 or 6 years ago. If your into hot rod chickin pickin Tele music he might be worth looking into. I think his problem was he didnt fit into any genre of music, but he was awesome live.

There aint that much out there on this guy though -hence the " under-rated " aspect of this thread.

As for keeping up with him - its just 3 chords.
The hard part is making 3 chords sound interesting. Not boring.

Without a doubt, I would have to go with the late great Roy Buchanan - Buchanan was doing pretty much everything Hendrix brought to the table without using any effects at all - just an old '53 Tele, his fingers and his heart & soul!!! The best recorded examples of his music are from live recordings - record companies and producers just didn't know how to record and present him - they could never catch the "live" Roy experience on tape. Check out a PBS show called "The Greatest Unknown Guitarist in the World.

After that, I'd have to say Ry Cooder. Cooder is an accomplished musician, sideman and producer who has probably made his small fortune - but if you've ever had the chance to catch one of live shows, you've seen one of the best guitarists in the world. When Bonnie Raitt and George Harrison say Cooder is their favorite guitarist - ya have to sit up and take notice.

Definitely Gary Moore.
While he was at least recognized enough in Europe, in the U.S. he never achieved the well-deserved reputation as one of the greatest players of all times. When it comes to the full package of tone, technique, and soul there are not many to catch up with him.
May he rest in peace - I miss him badly.
