Ive always gauged what songs to play based off an audience, drunk or not, if they paid to hear you play then they are the "boss" so to speak.

Im not a pro by any means and dont need the money from gigs for my support, but I do understand and respect my crowds.

But its just not on the cover bar band level, take a band like ZZ Top, they have certain songs that I imagine they play every night, (Tush, Lagrange) for all we know they hate these songs, but they play them cause thier audience wants to hear them play them.

Im sorry Paper to me on this your logic is just f**k!

JW, IF all you are is a tap-dance act then yeah, I hear ya...... But Lets look at ZZ top... When You go to a ZZ top Concert and you ask em to Play David Bowie, Are you telling me that ZZ Top'
s logic is f*cked up if they tell the audience, sorry but we don't do Bowie? Based on YOUR logic, the audience is boss and they dont get in the door to see that band for less than 60 bucks... so in your entire career as a musician, are you telling me that ZZ Top's Logic is f*cked up?

Now that I'd love to hear.
And who goes to a ZZ-Top show to hear Bowie :?
Some bands do cater to the audience and take requests including bands that do their own music.
But there are also bands that refuse to play there older tunes. Some even advertise that their tour will feature the "NEW" material.

Chit I thought it was obligatory that someone in the crowd yells "play Freebird" at every show. :P

Paper you can turn this around anyway you want too.

Im sure you would be a lot of fun to be in a band with!

LOL, Your logic is f**k and thats my opinion.

Ive been playing off and on with the same guys for close to 30 years, we do what we do, and if my audience wants me to tap dance then I will tap dance.

Good Luck

Excellent version sounds true to the original! We do this song. I have ALWAY'S loved Badfinger! We opened for them in 1996 and they were only 3 piece at that time.

Badfinger was an awesome band, very tragic thou, I think the two guys that wrote most of the song both committed suicide.

I love the song, Cant Live, If Living Is Without You! But I dont like thier version of it, I like that Neilson guys version, better.

But man they were some awesome songwriters.

Not understanding that playing is 20% instrument knowledge and 80% music theory.

I doubt I will ever work with someone who doesn't know basic music theory anymore.

I love Badfinger, you guys do a great
version of that song. Hate to here they
committed suicide.

Music theory is about relationships, and
a lot of good music is about broken relationships
and tonally mending them.

Jeez that's deep

Its here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pibBs_P ... ature=plcp

I believe that Jimmy's chords /attacks and sustains are very much in keeping with the original song, While Paul's Voice, stays on melody of the original song...He doesn't "jazz it up" or twist it around...He sings it like the song calls for... and his own voice/tone affords a natural variance of the original style. To me that's what I would pay to see if I payed a cover to get in the door.

And who goes to a ZZ-Top show to hear Bowie :?

For that matter, goes to a local bar's band to hear Bowie? My point is this. I do not dispute that the audience drives the "cover" material' But On the same token, I personally would draw the line ... If I was a Zepplin tribute band, then hell no I aint doing AC DC, no matter how much the audience begs me. If I was a generic home variety cover band, yeah I'd do the AC DC, but I might take issue with what songs of theirs to cover... It all depends... I'm just saying, if it were my act, the last word wouldn't necessarily rest with the audience... That don't mean I dismiss what they want...

Chit I thought it was obligatory that someone in the crowd yells "play Freebird" at every show. :P

LOl yep there is always that one guy... Then there is thing about audiences we havent discussed..."Majority-rule" In some bars, yelling Out "Free bird" is almost as bad as yelling out a racial epitaph...:D

I do not dispute that role and function of Cover bands...
