I never got the whole DREAM THEATER thing...

Take this song for instance ... seems mathematical, no soul.

Damn ... could be an be open season on me this month ...

George

I think he means the other Berkley - the school of music. I'd kill for a year at that place.

But I agree with you. I respect the hell out of Dream Theatre but the music doesn't tend to move me like some. Kansas went that route but they had i think - a bit more umph.

Some artist display an amazing technical ability and their music still moves me.
Carlos Santana or Joe Satriani for instance.
Not having much exposure to DREAM THEATER (as a matter of fact before I came on Bandmix I'd never even heard of them.) Their music does not move me. Impressive musicianship for sure.
But to me, about as interesting as listening to Pavarotti.

With all due respect I have noticed that some folks have a one track mind when it comes to music. What I mean by that is music (to them) is supposed to sound a certain way. IMO Dream Theater has the knowledge and the desire to think outside the box. It is also obvious to me that they don't want to play music the same way and in standard time signature. It is also my opinion that you would have to be VERY musically educated to be able to pull off music at that level. John Petrucci is a VERY passionate and soulful guitar player. When I listen to Dream Theater
music I get a feeling of musical euphoria! They are one of my favorite bands!

I don't know that its a one track issue.

I know what moves me and what don't.

DREAM THEATER or what little I have been exposed to ... don't.

Nor do a lot of what I would call " complex " bands / music.

I love classical music. I love to hear my son when he's playing with the orchestra.
The other night I was thrilled to hear them, even as they worked with a choral group.
It was great!

However when they played a piece that was quite complex in order to feature the " concert master " ( kind of a lead violin player LOL ) I noticed his playing again, to me, felt mathematical or even mechanical in nature.
Despite his obvious technical skill, it was an excellent opportunity for me to go take a piss.
When I came back he had just finished and the orchestra began to play SLEIGH RIDE.
Again the simple minded musician in me was thrilled.

As an after thought this may also be a reason I don't care for much of the modern metal scene.
Despite some really cool tones and great technical ability of the guitarist.
I am not moved by a thousand notes per minute.
Perhaps it is more the spaces between the notes I enjoy.

See ... there you go.

All a matter of taste.

Life would suck if we were all the same.
