I WANT my material next to artists I admire or sound similar to. I WANT blues lovers to listen to my tunes. I have the best chance of developing a fanbase with targeted marketing. I'm not going to be touring the world any time soon so I don't need a promoter or agent. Jango makes sense to me and the indie artists I've communicated with think it's a great tool to find out 1) is my material marketable? 2) Is it bluesy? 3). Will people BUY my CD? I can find these answers and more without holding my breath waiting for the right person to promote me. And it's at a very reasonable cost.

jimmydanger wrote:Heh heh, yeah he didn't put much into the review but any press is good press. We've gotten a lot of mileage from our connection to the Stooges; we are mentioned three times in Mr. Callwood's new book about the Stooges and the Detroit music scene. BTW "a dirty little EP with five scummy little blues-punk gems." is actually quite a compliment around here; street cred baby!

Jimmy, and anybody else reading this. And this is just my humble opinion... I know that on the surface, Any press is good press (even negative press) . Let me splain why I think that writer did you guys an injustice...

1) He paid a Non-Libel tribute. That is, he opened up his op-ed with a factoid, that no one can dispute (ie. Stooges) , and wont get him in any trouble...while at the same time, gives credence to his write up) Basically wasted my time as a reader with 'Filler, up front'. That stuff should always go to the back as an extended interest AFTER the message delivers its intended point. In this case, I was expecting a solid opinion, which he failed to deliver.)

2) His review of the "BITS" infers that the BITS have a nastier , dirtier CD than the Farleys. While that is solely his opinion about the BITS( be it true/false/bad/good...), the taboo here is that he preempted the actual review on The Farleys with a not-so-positive statement about the Farleys in another band's review. Given that, What's a reader to perceive about the Farleys from this writer? Answer: Skip the FARLEY's CD and go purchase the BITS CD.

3) Let me illustrate another way: On the very same page...
-ELECTRIC SIX: "...Heartbeats and Brainwaves (Metropolis) is incredible...."
-IGGY & THE STOOGES: ...The live material is awesome...
-BITS: " ...yet it’s probably the best record we got this week...."
-CHAD HOFFMAN: "...it’s surprisingly honest, well-produced and packed with quality tunes. ..."
-TENACITY: "...is a stunning piece of work..."
-JEHOVAH'S WITNESS PROTECTION: "... is absolutely superb..."
-BLUE SNAGGLETOOTH: "...and it sounds awesome...."
-EMILIO BASA: "...is fascinating....Interesting"
-ILL -IT-BEATZ: "...felt like a really good massage..."

-THE FARLEYS: "...Of course, Rock is a little busy nowadays (see above), but that hasn’t stopped the Farleys putting out some hard hitting rock ’n’ roll...."

Finally, The first third of his tiny write-up was the aforementioned filler, the middle third was the (above statement about Rock n Roll) The last third was a 'tagging'. This guy couldn't give an 'opinion', because frankly I don't think he listened to the EP.

If It were me, Id be insulted by this... I would prefer no write up to this poor excuse of a critique on your material. But that's just my perception and view...

BTW, I think you guys rock...and if I'd have been the writer I would have given you so much better exposure in the same amount of print.

I thought it was a pretty straight forward review. Somebody else doesn't like you, at least this time they are just talking about your music. :)
