No it's not a thread about cover songs.
Nor a comparison between two artists rendition of a specific song.

It's about life in general and that of bands, in particular NKF

A new era's dawn breaks ...

Stay tuned.

And while we wait for the good news we pause for a commercial and beer;

Crack another frosty.
Might be a spell for the good news.

My apologies for the dramatics. I was pondering the appropriate text when My wife whisked me away for fajitas and a margarita.

Here is the deal.

Tony, our back up vocalist is in search of more gainful employment that may interfere with his ability to be as ... how should I put this ... " present " as to the purposes of the Band.

Ray, has indicated that he would like to focus only on vocals in performance so we are in search of a rhythm guitar player whom fits the needs, mission, and chemistry of NKF

A major paradigm shift from the cloister of 5 we have been operating with for the last several years.

Our prayers are that this is a positive move not only for the band and our members, but for the perspective new member.

I cant say That I don't understand the quest for a steady check.... The guy has to do whats best for him and his family. The guitarist turned vocalist...sound like he just needs a break... I bet ya if he gets some time away he'll come back with axe in hand. Can you guys afford a small sabbatical to think out the strategies?

In the mean time, be tough on the new candidates and Don't settle for less if you can at all help it. On the other hand, new blood brings its own positive implications, so some slack in margin might be in order.

For sure there are no hard feelings towards Tony. He has a wife and a young daughter and needs to be more gainfully employed.
He is not leaving us per sae but there are questions about his being available as readily as before.
We have and will continue to pray on this matter because Tony is a very valued part of NKF and has contributed much more that just some vocals.

And as far a Ray is concerned he is more vocalist whom picked up guitar to have something to sing to.
His first love is the singing and would prefer not to have to play guitar at all. There have been hints at this but he really let us know his feelings on the matter so another guitarist there will be.
And you can bet he or she will have to fit the chemistry and be bloody reliable, as we consider these traits of greater importance than guitar skill.

A six months to year probation period is likely.
Same as we did with my brother Tony when he joined.

:D Lifes #1 constant is change. It is the thing that everyone is reluctant to accept.

But if I could talk my wife into moving to Texas....

For sure I'm reluctant to say the least.
But the search is on.
Had one individual respond to a message in request of audition.
I sent him my phone number to call for a telephone interview .

Last I heard from him.

Come on guys ... I really don't eat our young.
( Unless we are really hungry )

You should avoid forcing the issue. Let the band flow into a different form. It might be better than trying to force the issue by bringing in some one new that doesn't have any history with NKF.

Sounds more like Tony has things to work out, than the rest of the band.

In the mean whilst try a different line up with what you still have.

Your wife makes you fajitas and margaritas? You lucky fellow! 8)

Yes Glen, your right.

Except the guitarist is to free Ray to pursue being a vocalist full time and not to do with Tony.

If the new guitarist is capable of doing some vocals as well ... it will take some of the pressure off of Tony ... not replace him.

. Funny you should mention Turn the Page. That's another song I think is a POS. It must be a terrible existence playing sold out arenas. Maybe Seger should quit and become a Walmart greeter....

I just hooked up with some guys based upon the traits you like so much - which to me look like this:

Typically guys that have professional experience can play, but they come in flavors - some like to play just like the record - some like to mark it with themselves and include originals. You (and i) would want the latter I think.

Next step is they have to be RELIABLE and disciplined.

Probation? It would be kind of uncool to say that to a new guy. Musicians need all the respect you can give them so they feel cocky enough to get out there in front of a crowd. And they need to feel themselves to be part of the 'we' in the band so their cockiness is based on playing with folks they click with and believe in.

If you aren't sure of them at the gut level just hire them as a contractor like you would a studio guy - just for the gig, or for time period while you a) try him out, and b) look for others. Sort of the same thing but at a more respectful level. Had a drummer like that once for several months - great drummer but he just didn't fit - we paid him by the job.

Realistically, a new guy always knows himself to be on sort of unofficial probabtion until he's proved himself reliable, done the job at rehearsals and gigs, and proved himself easy to work with and quick on the uptake. If he is a first rate confident player (the kind you want) he also has the band on probation under the same conditions. Human relationships are so complex and never more so than in the music world.

You've been doing this a while as a group and have lots of music out there for prospects to see. I hope the people who audition with you want exactly what you need! Don't let it get you down - bands always change over time. I know it took you a long time to get this together originally but you did and now you're building on a solid foundation.

ps - since lyou've noted your Christian orientation I thought you might be interested to know I'm trying to set up a side project to do some music that could be used by our church or school.

He's a whiner ... never liked that aspect of the song myself.

Great post Talbot.

I will take some of what you say into consideration and some to heart.

I fully expect for the " probation " period to go both ways and it is not something I would put a hard deadline too.

We clicked so well with Steve and Eric that their probation period lasted all of about ten seconds.

I fear the change only because I'm human and it is the unknown.
I look forward to the unknown because I'm a warrior at heart.

Slight deference is we are a praise band. We are not hired or paid.
All proceeds go to the mission.
It will require a person of a certain demeanor or personality to work this hard for what to most seem intangible.

I have begun to be anticipatory of the whole thing for a pair of reasons.
It will be cool for Steve, Eric, and I to work with a dedicated guitarist.
( dedicated in that this will be his / her primary function in the band )
It will also be cool to see Ray " set free " on stage not to be tied to his guitar and boom mic.
His vocal ability has improved exponentially over the last three years.
I expect great things from this young man.
Yes I do. 8)
