The answer to that question is subjective.

For our band, we would say "yes". When we started our band we felt like classic rock was overdone. Every cover band did classic rock. And particularly, in our area, we felt like every classic rock cover band shared the same set list. There was no variation at all. Our first bass player (who wasn't able to stay with the band long, but we really appreciated having him) said he got requests all the time in his previous band (classic rock cover band) to do NEW stuff. But the guys in his band never wanted to learn anything new, so they never did anything. He said one of the things he liked about our band was that we were doing new material.

That said, we haven't played out yet, so I have no idea how well some of this stuff is going to go over. It's been a long time getting this band put together because of various issues beyond our control. We should be playing out in June and I'll be posting full reports.

I know what I've seen in the past, people will dance to pretty much anything if you can present it well (and there's enough alcohol involved).

Most of all, I'd say - play what you like. If those 40 songs are what you really dig, they by all means - play them. And play them well; with passion.

Yes, it's dated. How will your band stand out? Will you be playing these note for note, or will you be putting your own twist on them?

There are thousands of bands playing these same songs. I think there are at least 20 in my little neck o' the woods. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, too, though. It's a fine way to pick up a few bucks.

I've played quite a few of them, myself, over the last year.

I would suggest that you play them in your own style, rather than note for note, but there are many in here who disagree with that. Either way obviously works for many bands.

It's a fine list of tunes that have been popular for many years for many ppl. While I wouldn't go see an act that played this stuff, I am definitely in the minority. As long as you have heart when you play them, & you are entertaining as an act, you will do well with it.

Good luck.

I have to wonder, why did you resurrect a thread that was dead and buried over 2 years ago????

If you're performing 45 minute sets and there's 12 tunes per set, that's less than 4 minutes per song. Taking into account talking between a few songs that may be less than 3:30 per song. Where's the jamming, improvising? There's got to be some room for interpretation or are you like a live jukebox? Do you ever throw any originals in? The blues band I'm in always does at least one original per set. I haven't performed in an all cover band in years.

Its my thread and new people come here everyday with new fresh ideas. As I am in a cover band, its always great to hear from other musicians on what is working for them and their fans. I will always go with two heads are better than one. Sorry this thread is a problem for you. The subject line is fluid enough to be on a constant change from year to year.

Shish :(

By request from RGMix.

FB,
Our first two sets are very pop and pretty close to the original tracks. By the third set we get a bit more AOR and let the dogs out a little. Some of the old Hendrix, Deep Purple, Surf gets pretty wild and free. Remember we are a cover band playing tunes everyone knows. No originals but we do put our own stamp on most songs and avoid parroting songs note for note. That is the difference between a cover band and a tribute band.

I think it's great RG. My friends have a band who are all in their 20s they have a metal band and they do some of those songs. They have a primarily young audience and they do great.

We were at Disneyland yesterday and there was an 80s band playing in Tomorrowland. They were doing everything from the 80s to now, but what got me was they did Barracuda by Heart then did "Peek-A-Boo" by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Not many people remember that song, but I will say that everybody was dancing and having a great time.

So if you guys are good and you can do it in a style that gets people up and partying - who cares?
