Guitars and amps are just tools. If they work for you to get the job done then they are plenty good enough. EVH could walk into a club tonight and plug in a Squier (made in China) to a battery powered Pignose amp and find amazing tones that would make you weep. Great guitar tone has always been mostly in the fingers.

Guys that tell you you can't play "right" unless you have a $4k LP Custom through a $8k Matchless amp are BOZOs... Ignore. They probably work for the local high end music store anyways.

What do I like? Well I do appreciate quality gear and I also prefer to buy it used and cheap. My gig rig consists of 2 USA Fenders, a Mesa F30 amp, and a handful of pedals. Total investment around $1800. I have considered using a Vox Tonelab LE running through the PA board and leaving the amp home but I am old and set in my ways:)

I've got an easy solution for you. You said you were starting to work on originals, right? Go ahead and record them, put out a platinum CD and then have Gibson sponsor you. Then you can get whatever guitar you want for FREE...

Crip2nite wrote:Glen, the tubes are fine...I make sure I only use this amp at gigs and only gigs.... at rehearsals I use a 150 watt Solid state head and at home I use a 30 watt Solid State head. I figure I've only had this head for about a year and a half and it's only been on about 2-3 hours each gig and I only do 1-2 gigs a month so there's plenty of time before the tubes need a changing... I've gone 2 years playing straight tubes at both rehearsals and gigs back in the day and tubes were fine for a good 2 years...

Well then I don't know what to say. You are doing everything RIGHT and it sounds more like you dealing with a bunch of jealous bitches. I am amazed at some of the egomaniacs that will tear you down to make themselves feel more important.

Hey, if you get a Marshall and a tube screamer, and then a few other pedals,,, I bet you can get that Marshall to sound just like the Line 6.

LOL...I hear ya Glen....One of the worst experiences was when I was doing a gig with one of my former bands when we were taking a break outside and we had a big crowd around us when all of a sudden this fukkin' asshead who actually works for Marshall seriously started putting down my rig questioning what the hell I was thinking when I purchased it  It caught me by surprise and then it started a whole conversation the next couple rehearsals on having to upgrade my equipment.. fuk those asswipes!.. needless to say, I was out of the band within a month of that conversation. I knew damn well at that point in my life, my boss was selling his place and I wasn't sure if I still had a job so the last thing I was gonna do is lay down 3+grand on equipment...as a matter of fact....that's when I vigorously started liquidating all my valuable assets. (bike, axes, jewelry, etc..) I was scared sh¡tless of becoming unemployed(you remember our conversation on the phone, Glen  ) and I went into defense mode to make sure I had enough $$ for emergencies should I be long term unemployed! All said and done, I was able to amass about 10 grand with the sale of my most precious stuff and have that now locked into a special account as I'm still not sure of what the future will bring regarding my employment as I'm still on part time.

Opinions are like assholes ...

I've not seen anything by Marshall I'd care to own ... seriously over rated.

That's what I'd told the prick right up front.

Crip Im kind of a tone head, but I have never found anything wrong with your tone. I wouldnt sweat it man, those jokers are just jealous of your chops and say sh*t like that cause they cant say anything about your playing ability.

You know from my post on FB about your tone that I love the way you sound.

These days you are playing in more of a cover band anyway, the people that come to see your shows dont give a sh*t if you are playing a LP or a piece of wood with strings on it. Also if something happens to get damaged at a gig then you arent out a gazillion dollars.

Keep On Rockin Man

(don't mind the fag-red pants..lol)

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I'm glad there are no pictures of what I wore in the 80's...skin tight leather pants, chest-hair exposing shirts and a rainbow guitar strap.

Hello friends! I hope all is well with everyone... I have been busy with the band and haven't had much time to participate here. I think tone starts from the musician. A good player can take mediocre equipment and make it sound extraordinary. The expensive equipment doesn't always equate to better tone, in fact, most of my idols have frankensteined guitars and garage-modified pawn shop amps. What is important, in my perspective, is to find the tone that suits you best and use it well. Not everyone will have the same taste as you so don't worry about what they say. Have fun with it :)

FARPA (Fag Red Pants Association)

Any of the line6 combo amps I've played with... My thoughts were they were next to useless.
But I've heard decent things about their tube ampy stack thingy.

Sounds fine on the vids.
