Oh, and answering the phone when I call while obviously high is also a red flag.
The weird thing about this guy was that he was one of four people who bothered to go to my personal web site and fill out my contact form to reply to me. Of the other three, one was a woman who, well, is a little suspicious herself, one is a woman who might be promising but is geographically inconvenient and the other I'm auditioning next Thursday.
All of them found the site through Craigslist.
Craigslist is still my best source of prospective bandmates, but it's a little discouraging how many of them are obvious problems for one reason or another.
There are thieves out there who are very clever about infiltrating into your location, wherever your gear resides, distracting you away from the gear if necessary then nicking it, when your guard is down.
Craig's list has all walks of life... I swear to god, some of those freaks are a fry short of a happy meal.... To cipher out the denizens, I do the following:
1) When they respond to my ad, I direct them to a site I have, where they can down load my sample.
2) I ask them to review it, and let me know if they like it (This tells me If I've passed their audition)
3) If they like it, I ask them to lay down their respective track (I.e bassist lay down a bass track) on it and send it back. (Production quality not important at this stage)
The way I figure... Legit musicians have no problem with this process... Its easy enough to conduct. But the non-legit ones can't handle it, either because they are posers, or simply too green for the demand at hand.. Either way, they get sifted out pretty fast. (And all the while, no information about location, etc has been exchanged yet).
In the even that they really come back with some awesome track, then what are the odds that their intentions are less than legit?
